Joined an organization with 500 employees and no formal HR function (previously handled by Payroll). Member of the senior management team reporting to the CEO.

BHP purchased the refinery as part of a strategic move to support the copper refining business in Tucson. Was a key member of a 4 person management team, replacing the President when out-stationed.
As part of the purchase, BHP agreed to retain Copper Range employees who had seniority as part of their Steelworkers agreement. Had responsibility for HR, Health and Safety, Environment, and Public Relations
* Implemented HR policies and programs
* Managed employee relations in a unionized environment
* Implemented BHP's Health and Safety Management System as well as training in its use and ongoing management
* Implemented with assistance of staff from Tucson, BHP's Environmental Management System

Reported to the VP HR for BHP Copper and had responsibility for all expatriate relocations and pay and compensation for the Copper Group.
* Worked with a team to develop new expatriate pay and conditions to be used by all of BHP
* Successfully prepared employees and families prior to undertaking new assignments and with settling into their new locations

* Developed a manpower planning tool to match Copper's future needs with various forms of supply
* Managed Copper's Graduate Recruitment Program – toured universities in the UK and Canada to select and screen engineering candidates for both summer experience and full time employment following completion of their degrees.

Chosen for this overseas assignment to train national employees. OK Tedi employed approximately 2000 unionized and staff employees.
* Supervised a staff of 11 nationals responsible for all day-to-day HR routines
* Managed annual leave and recreational leave budget (US$4.5M)
* Implemented cost controls in leave and other benefit spending reducing waste
* Streamlined leave and other administrative practices

Started as a Recruiter reporting to HR Manager then later indirect reporting to Industrial Relations Manager. Island Copper at its peak in 1981 employed over 800 unionized employees. Mining operations ceased in 1994.

* Supervised a security team of 6 people
