Summary of Experience
Business management and financial accounting have dominated the last twenty years of my life.
With my recent experience at Dawson Co-op, I have now developed a very well rounded skill set to meet the needs of any business and help in maximizing their success.
After six years at Dawson Co-op, half as controller and half as General Manager, we have been able to achieve sales growth from $28 million at the end of 2002 to just over $70 million in 2008.
I have managed many types of projects ranging from very small up to very large, some in excess of $5 million over several years.
Performing in various roles over the last twenty years has taught me the value of honesty, integrity, accuracy, time management and above all, success.
The society of Certified Management Accountants (CMA) has placed me at the pinnacle of education. CMA training focuses predominantly on strategic management at all business levels.
The ability to communicate effectively at all levels has been a cornerstone of my success over the years.
Setting up and maintaining effective systems to ensure productivity and job satisfaction for all employees is foundational to my management style.

Professional/Employment Experience
Mar 2006-Present General Manager – Dawson Co-operative Union
This retail co-operative in Dawson Creek B.C. sells a wide range of products in multiple locations including fuel, food, clothing, hardware, lumber and agro supplies.
Reporting directly to an elected board of directors I am responsible for the operation of the entire business. With a total of 150-160 employees (8 direct reports) I have been able to lead the company from sales of $45 million in 2005 to sales of $70 million in 2008.
Growth and profits reached record high levels during my 3 years here.
Highlights:
- Expanded profitable commodity groups with major upgrade projects (ranging from $2 million up to $6 million)
- Focused on staff retention through a severe labour shortage period with enhanced benefit packages and company culture improvements
- Updated organization structure to allow for company growth by adding Marketing and HR management positions
- Utilized One Minute Management model to focus on goal achievement and optimize time management
- Was able to work extensive hours when necessary to fill management absences (predominantly the controller position)
Aug 2004-Present CEO – Proteus Business Strategy Solutions Ltd.
In 2004, after completing my CMA, I set up a business consulting company to be able to use my CMA skills to their fullest potential.
In this capacity I have performed a combination of longer term engagements plus smaller engagements involving business analysis, business plan writing, strategic direction and implementation plans.
The diversity experienced in these smaller engagements has helped me to build the ability to hit the ground running and begin contributing to a business very quickly.
By owning such a company, I am also given the ability to perform any type of employment through my company which may suit the employer in many cases.
Mar 2003–Nov 2007 Controller – Dawson Co-operative Union
Fulfilled all finance and accounting functions of the business in this senior management role. Employee total ranged from 130-150 (5 direct reports).
Company sales ranged from $28 million in 2002 to sales of $50+ million in 2006.
Highlights:
- Streamlined many outdated processes to improve productivity/efficiency
- Assisted the board of directors with policy writing/re-writing and ensured all policies were followed company-wide
- Instituted a company-wide performance based bonus package to improve staff motivation and retention while improving productivity
- Planned and executed project to add a new fuel location in another town to enhance the company's growth and profits. Location is strong and profitable.
- Created an I.T. network infrastructure to link departments together to enhance the efficiency of reporting and communication across all company levels
- Performed all the usual financial functions such as budgeting, period end, year-end reporting, management/board reporting, audit, 5yr planning etc.
Aug 2005-Aug 2006 CFO (contract) – District of Tumbler Ridge
Performed part-time (mostly weekends) over a one year period.
I reported directly to the CAO of the District which employs around 50 employees (4 direct reports).
Annual budget for this municipality was around $8 million.
Highlights:
- Was able to learn daily processes and system very quickly (essential)
- Prepared District property tax package and presented to Council
- Prepared annual budget including 5 year capital budget
- Completed year-end reporting and multi-fund reconciliations
- Maintained processes to keep business running day-to-day
- Streamlined many outdated processes for efficiency improvement
- Assisted District in hiring the permanent CFO and ensured they were in place before finalizing contract
Jul 2000–Apr 2003 Mine Accountant – Bullmoose Operating Corporation
At this coal mining company in Tumbler Ridge I performed a wide variety of accounting functions. Working for two different mining operations consecutively I prepared reconciliations, financial statements and analysis.
Reporting directly to the mine controller this business grossed hundreds of millions in metallurgical coal sales with an employee base of 200+.
With one mine just closed I gained a great deal of experience in accounting for a shutdown process including fixed asset sales and management for a large fleet of heavy equipment.
It was during my work at this company that I completed all of my CMA studies which served as my springboard into management roles.
Feb 1989–Jul 2000
During this time period I performed various accounting and finance roles.
90% of this time period was spent in the energy industry in Melbourne, Australia with a government statutory authority regulating the electricity and gas industries.
Education
I received my CMA designation in 2004 after fast-tracking the course requirements and completing the Strategic Leadership Program. I attend an abundance of conferences, seminars and training workshops every year to enhance and refresh my professional development.
Personal Interests
I am an expert in Cricket and Australian Rules Football. I enjoy travel, hiking, healthy living, reading, making new friends, movies, poker, golf, playing sports and going to the gym. I hold Australian and Canadian citizenships.
