I am responsible for the daily operation of the business. The service department and parts department managers were my direct reports. Our primary customers were the mines in the Four Corners area. We sell and serviced Euclid-Hitachi and Ingersoll-Rand drilling equipment. I create the revenue budget as well as managed the expenses to maintain the margin we were seeking.

Senior Maintenance Planner    

I was responsible for creating the annual maintenance budget, getting approval for the maintenance budget and adhering to the budget. I prepared capital budget requests in conjunction with mine engineering. My responsibility was to generate from the maintenance budget an 18-month plan, quarterly, monthly, weekly, and daily plans. The plans include preventative maintenance, minor and major repairs for approximately 150 pieces of equipment.

As superintendent, I was responsible for 15 direct reports, 85 mechanics and electricians, and all of the support groups i.e. clerical, lubrication, and the mine air conditioning department. Our emphasis was on employee safety. I believe that is the common language every employee must speak and understand. We successfully implemented a “mine wide safety system” that turned out to be amongst our best accomplishments. We vastly improved our safety performance.

We improved the availability of 20 Wiseda 240-ton electric trucks from middle 50% to the middle 80% range over the two years. We also were able to reduce the operating cost of all of the fleets by 11% over the two-year period. The changes came about through the efforts of an excellent planning department and a dedicated staff. Improved communications with unions reduced the number and frequency of strikes, helping to improve both safety and morale.

Early 1995 I was transferred to Mt. Newman Mine from Ok Tedi (Papua New Guinea) to fill a newly created position, that of Planning Supervisor. My responsibility was to organize the mine Maintenance Planning Department (11) to one common planning system that would work in conjunction with the implementation of MIMS 3.07. This was a short-term position and took one year to complete. I wrote a QA procedure that became part of the Mine QA Procedure to serve future planners. I spent approximately two months working with the field maintenance planners developing an overhaul plan for four XP2800 face shovels, presenting it to the mine manager and implementing it. The overhaul project was budgeted at $14,000,000 and a completion time of five months. We achieved both objectives.

Ok Tedi located in the western mountains of Papua New Guinea. It is one of the most remote mines in the Southern Hemisphere. I performed both shut down planning and planning for the support shops between scheduled shutdowns. The shops I planned for were the fabrication shop, the weld shop, the rubber shop and the machine shop. The plans had to be very detailed and in simple English. The tradespersons were 95% nationals. Our target for both milling systems was 97% availability. The planning department at Ok Tedi is exceptional and it shows in the performance of the mill.

I received a promotion from loader shop foreman to planner. I performed the function on a paper system for almost a year and a half. We then implemented a computer software system, MIMS 2.3. I was on a team of four that performed the conversion, training the foreman and the hourly employees to use the new system.
