Construction Services Director

As the Construction Services Director I am responsible for the project site including construction services supporting the $3 billion Long Lake Phase 1 oil sands Upgrader -located near Fort MacMurray, Alberta. Managers directly reporting into this position include Safety, Environment, Labour Relations, Construction Common Services, Logistics, and Heavy Lift Cranes. I also act as site liaison with our SAGD joint venture partner ( Nexen Inc. ) on common services.

1996 to May 2006 Diavik Diamond Mines Inc. ( Rio Tinto PLC )

Positions with Diavik Diamond Mines include:

2005 Jan to May 2006 – Strategic Development / Engineering and Construction Senior Manager
Responsible for the second phase of engineering and construction projects supporting an operating diamond mine in the Canadian arctic. Projects include support for a water retention dike in Lac de Gras to facilitate open pit mining as well as the infrastructure to support two underground developments. Responsible for the engineering design and construction of tailings dams, frozen key trench containment dams, water treatment plant expansions, ROM crushing and ore handling, 18 million litre fuel tank, pipelines, underground decline box cut, 13.8 kva power distribution, underground surface infrastructure.
Acted as VP of Engineering and Construction on numerous occasions. I was also a steering committee member for the following committees; Strategic Development, Leadership / Management development, Trades Apprentice Selection and Development.

2002 to 2004 Dec - Mine Operations – Site Services & Infrastructure
Senior Manager
Responsible for the development of the Site Services and Infrastructure department. In 2002 I relocated from Calgary, Alberta to Yellowknife, NWT. The mine site is a fly-in fly-out operation. I was directly responsible for a $40 million annual maintenance and operations budget. The site services department operates and maintains all site facilities including aerodrome, 27 MW diesel power plant, 13.8 kva electrical distribution, mine water treatment facility capable of treating 30,000 + m3/day, potable water treatment, sewage treatment, building maintenance, boiler plant, permanent and construction camp, catering and camp services, open pit dewatering, lube storage & distribution, fuel storage and distribution, waste handling, winter road offloading / logistics, mobile cranes, site services heavy equipment, and site wide projects. Two major contracts with First Nations groups made up the majority of the work force.
Acted as VP of Operations on numerous occasions.

2000 to 2002 – Phase 1 Construction
Assistant Construction Manager
As one of the Diavik Owners Representatives I was responsible for site management of the EPCM team ( SNC-Lavalin ). The $1.3 billion diamond mine was built in the Canadian arctic on an island in a large northern lake ( Lac de Gras, NWT). The project was complete ahead of schedule and under budget. The project had an extensive civil works program that included the construction of a 4 km earth fill dam with a plastic concrete cut off wall in a large northern lake to enable open pit development. The Plant Site development included a 1.5 million tpy process facility including 27 MW of diesel power generation. The construction work force peaked at 1,150 men. Tailings dams utilized frozen key trench construction. A quarrying and crushing facility capable of 25, 000 tonne / day supplied the rock for the dams. Logistics included the construction of an airport capable of supporting Hercules and Jet aircraft. Access to the site was also available via a winter ice road between February and March. Approximately 4,000 loads per year of supplies were trucked over the two month period that the road was open.

One of my career accomplishments that I am most proud is that I played a key role in completing this project within the schedule and budget targets.

1997 to 2000 – Advanced Exploration / Feasibly Phase
Site Manager
Managed all site activities at the Diavik site including safety, environment, camp facilities, and logistics. I was responsible for the site coordination and supervision of advanced drilling programs for geotechnical and exploration work. Summer drill programs on land were carried out utilizing helicopters and fly rigs. Winter drill programs were carried out on the ice of Lac de Gras utilizing engineered ice pads. As one of the owners representatives, I participated in the feasibility study cost estimates, site planning and development.

1995 Jan to 1997 – Pre-Feasibility Phase
Site Coordinator
My direct involvement with Diavik Diamond Mines ( Rio Tinto ) started in 1995. I was seconded by Kennecott Canada ( Rio Tinto ) from Acres International to coordinate and supervise the environmental base line study teams at the Diavik Diamond Mine site in the Canadian arctic. I was also responsible for environmental site compliance with regards to surface drilling and underground bulk sampling activities. I was responsible for the installation and management of the water treatment facility; which treated the underground decline discharge water. As one of the owners representatives, I participated in the pre-feasibility study cost estimates, site planning and development.

1988 to 1995 Acres International -Engineering & Consulting - Calgary, Alberta

I started with Acres as a Civil Superintendent on the site EPCM team for the construction of a Magnesium Smelting Plant. This role transitioned into commissioning, startup, and minor mechanical trouble shooting for the owner. Reporting to the Project Services manager my roles at Acres also included estimating, tender analysis, assisting in the preparation of specifications, contract documents, and site layouts for many prefeasibility / feasibility studies mostly on hydroelectric projects. Projects include the Mamquam Hydroelectric plant on the Mamquam River in B.C. Snare Cascades in the NWT, Aishihik underground hydro electric plant in the Yukon, Cabinet Gorge Hydroelectric Expansion in Montana, Low Pa Mong Hydroelectric study-China.

Major field assignments included construction of earth fill dams, coffer dam with cut off wall. I held Construction Manager positions for bridge and interchange construction, oil field / gas plant reclamations, and hydro electric power plant rehabilitation.

1986 to 1988 Stuart Olson Construction – Edmonton Alberta

Projects worked on include road construction in the Edmonton Alberta area, two bridges in Northern Alberta and one bridge on HWY 16 near Edson, Alberta.
