Arnotts Biscuits (PNG) Limited    
(a subsidiary of the Campbell Soup Company)
    Reporting To: Country General Manager
•    The Papua New Guinea operation of Campbell’s is the largest manufacturer of biscuits in PNG (80% market share) and snackfoods (55% market share). There are two manufacturing facilities in the country, two depots and four outstations. The company employs some 550 locals and 11 expatriate staff
•    My responsibilities are to run the commercial activities of the organisation including accounting, taxation, internal controls, insurance, company secretarial, business analysis, IT and human resources. I also act for the Country General Manager when he is out of the country
Achievements
•    After a very successful 1999 financial year we were given responsibility for all of Arnott’s Australia’s export business. We turned this business around from a $1m loss to a $3m profit in one year before handing it back to Arnotts Australia
•    Raised the commercial standards of the organisation
•    Operated effectively in a physically dangerous environment
October 1997 – July 1998    Manager External Reporting
Rio Tinto Coal (NSW)
Reporting to: Chief Financial Officer
•    Rio Tinto Coal (NSW) was formed mid 1997 by combining the former Novacoal and Coal & Allied Business Units of Rio Tinto, making it one of the largest coal producing entities in Australia. The group comprised a publicly listed company (Coal and Allied Limited) and two joint ventures (one with Mitsubishi and one with Pohang Iron and Steel)
•    Re-established and managed the financial accounting section following a major organisational restructure with almost my entire staff being new recruits (only one graduate accountant transferred from Sydney).
•    Managed the implementation of a new computer system (MIMS, going live on 5 January 1998)
•    Implemented a new head office reporting system (Hyperion), while working on the first year end (31 December 1997) for this new entity.
•    Worked under very difficult industrial circumstances during the restructure to meet our crucial test of meeting every deadline imposed upon us in reporting year end to head office in London
Achievements
•    Formed a new team to undertake a very difficult job under trying industrial and physical conditions
•    Achieved targets with an inexperienced team
•    Adapted to an Australian working environment with no transition time, after five years working in Asia

June 1996 – September 1997    Administration and Finance Manager
Rio Tinto China                         
Reporting to: Managing Director
•    Successfully changed the focus of the Rio Tinto office in China from a representative office to a support office and then managed the office.
•    Provided commercial support for Rio Tinto investment teams visiting China.
•    Maintained close liaison with the gold and coal development teams of Rio Tinto looking to invest in gold and coal mining ventures in China.
•    Reviewed the gold industry in China and looked at more than a dozen gold mine opportunities culminating in our recommendation to Rio Tinto that we not invest in gold in China at the current time. This was later proved to be correct as almost all major gold producers have now withdrawn from China
•    Evaluated possible coal mine investments. This culminated in the commencement of negotiations for feasibility studies for two 15 million tonnes per annum coal mines
Achievements
•    Established and managed an effective support office
•    Provided commercial advice to technical teams evaluating investment opportunities
•    Worked effectively in a foreign environment


July 1992 - June 1996        Manager Finance and Marketing
                PT Kelian Equatorial Mining - Based in Jakarta, Indonesia
                Reporting to: General Manager - Commercial.
•    The Kelian mine, on the island of Borneo in Indonesia, is one of the largest gold mines in the world and commenced production in early 1992. I was part of the initial head office team when the head office was established in Jakarta in mid 1992
•    Initially established the head office accounting, finance, secretarial and reporting functions for this new Rio Tinto Business Unit.
•    Added the marketing manager’s responsibilities into my role after the establishment period involving marketing and selling US$170 million p.a. of gold and silver
•    Adopted a broad management role which required working closely with the Managing Director in business analysis projects

Achievements
•    Worked effectively in an overseas environment for the first time
•    Established a successful commercial graduate program by recruiting Indonesian students at Australian universities before they returned to Indonesia
•    Developed the capability of Indonesian staff so that they could replace expatriate staff
•    Contributed effectively as part of a team setting up and running a large business in a difficult environment

April 1990 - July 1992        Senior Corporate Accountant
                Kelian Gold. Based in Melbourne, Australia

•    Contributed as part of a project team to oversee the construction and commencement of operations of a large gold mine in Indonesia
