EXPERIENCE

BECHTEL SAIC COMPANY, LLC
Senior Geotechnical Engineer
Las Vegas, NV May 2003 to present
Yucca Mountain Project – Design of 7.5 m diameter mains and shafts and 5.5 m diameter nuclear waste emplacement drifts and associated intersections under in situ, thermal, and seismic loads, development of design methodology.

- Completed several state-of-art design analyses utilizing two and three-dimensional continuous and distinct element codes by Itasca Consulting Group considering in situ, as well as thermal, and seismic loads. Planned the work scope, performed major portion of analyses and managed work of three geotechnical engineers including subcontractor to complete analyses on time and budget. This effort proved very successful as some of the planned 3D computers runs required several weeks to complete. The resulting work combined the conventional and advanced numerical modeling techniques into the documents, which address the baseline Project requirements and in which data transparency and traceability met strict requirements of NQA-1 Quality Assurance Program.
- Working as a liaison between design and construction contractor provided timely assistance to the engineering problems arising in the field, reviewed and provided input to construction specifications and field procedures. Wrote ground support specifications, supervised field implementation of procedures and associated in situ testing.
- Coordinated data collection and performed analysis of data to verify that safety and long-term stability of tunnels is maintained.
- With representatives of construction and quality assurance group performed periodical ESF tunnel and field inspections resulting in the direct feedback of inspection results to the design.
- Provided design services to the Site Project Field Engineering with timely engineering response to maintain field operations with as little interruption as possible.

THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY
Associate Professor of Mining Engineering University Park, PA August 2000 to May 2003
- Taught courses on rock mechanics including laboratory testing, bulk material handling systems, prepared seminars and workshops on underground and industrial safety issues.
- Upgraded testing equipment and modernized rock mechanics laboratory.
- Developed research in the area of rock mechanics, ground control, acoustic emission and applications of numerical modeling in rock mechanics design.
- Brought in graduate students and served as their advisor in areas of mine design and ground stability analyses.

MORRISON KNUDSEN CORP.
Lead Geotechnical Eng. and Principal Geotechnical Specialist Las Vegas, NV May 1997 to July 2000
Yucca Mountain Project – Construction of the Exploratory Studies Facility (ESF) including 8.7 km of 7.5 m diameter ramps and main tunnel, 5.5 m diameter Heated Drift facility with access drifts, and 2.6 km, 5.5 m diameter Enhanced Characterization Repository Block (ECRB) tunnel and several niches in rock strata of various quality.
- Supervised work of five geotechnical engineers and developed first version of the Design Geotechnical Database.
- Using field-acquired data, performed ESF ground support confirmation analyses, which provided evidence that in a number of instances ground support system installed was overly conservative.
- In coordination with the Construction Division performed ESF tunnel inspections (301X Areas), documented the use of materials and provided conceptual design and recommendations for the remedial ground support measures, such that the long-term stability of tunnels would be maintained.
- Performed and also reviewed a number of analyses of the future nuclear waste repository tunnels under assigned design range of thermal and seismic loading conditions.
- Performed verification studies on rock support systems required for the underground facility for the nuclear waste disposal. As a result, the established the methodology whereby field tunnel performance data were compared to those obtained from numerical analyses and performed initial calibration of numerical models.

PARSONS BRINCKERHOFF
Lead then Supervising Rock Mechanics Engineer. Houston and Dallas, TX March 1987 to February 1997
Provided rock mechanics expertise to projects in two major areas:1) geotechnical design of underground structures, and design and monitoring of field instrumentation of excavations in rocks, and 2) geotechnical expertise in design of cavern for storage of gas, crude oil, and compressed air.

Rock Mechanics
Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) Facility, Waxahachie, Texas – Construction of approximately 15 miles of 5.5 m diameter tunnel excavated in chalk, soft shale and Over-consolidated Clay, and 26 shafts of diameter 18, 21 and large elliptical 30x60 ft. Design of two large cut-and cover excavations and associated field instrumentation.
- Managed ground control analysis, numerical modeling and design of deep foundations of two large open cut-and-cover excavations resulting in moving the entire facility to another location because of identified foundation stability problems.
- Co-authored with consulting companies a set of field instrumentation specifications, part of bidding packages.
- Managed data gathering, generation of drawings as input to the Geotechnical Design Summary Reports for two sections of the Collider Tunnel - 5.5 miles tunnel length.
- Managed field measurements performed by three different subcontractors and internal measurement group on three large (30 x 60 ft) shafts excavated in soft rocks.
- Managed daily evaluations of instrumentation data and disseminated information to the excavation contractors. In two distinct cases alerted construction crews to the increasing deformation rates, the situation remedied in one case in applying additional coats of shotcrete, and in another, by completing grouting behind liner plates to stabilize the shaft collar. Attention to results of measurements triggered immediate action and was essential in avoiding potential claim.
- Designed ground support for tunnel and shafts and performed frequent field inspection and field mapping to verify that the ground support worked as planned and distributed information to all parties involved.
- Supervised field tests of rock reinforcement in shafts and tunnels (rockbolt pullout tests) to verify design input.
- Trained young engineers in the use of design software and procedures for calibrations of numerical models to assure that the field data are used to verify and to improve the design.
- With others published the results of design and modeling data such that the permanent records of design would be preserved.

Salt Mechanics
Projects for Government Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) and Various Clients Operating Underground Storage Facilities in Caverns Excavated in Salt Deposits.
- Routinely interacted with clients to establish the status of each operation and subsequent procedures for the operational parameters and long-term management of multi-cavern storage sites. Provided expertise on various aspects of salt solution mining and underground storage of oil and natural gas in natural salt formations.
- Evaluated performance, calculated remaining reserves, updated field documentation and provided operational advice to the owners of brine fields, SALGEMA, Brazil, (23 caverns) and General Chemical, Canada.
- Prepared the exploratory drilling and salt testing program for The Israel Electric Corporation, Ltd. The program involved both in-situ measurements and extensive laboratory testing program to prepare salt property database for the future development of gas storage caverns at Mount Sodom, Israel.
- Using the in situ measurements, e.g., borehole logs, data on brine/gas interface changes, sonar survey data, changes of cavern bottom elevations and gas injection records, provided assessment of cavern convergence and stability for Bay Gas Storage Co. Ltd., McIntosh, Alabama (domal salt).
- Using originally-developed rock property data supplemented by thermomechanical data obtained from the literature performed the rock mechanics analysis for CONOCO Inc, for the Project involving conversion of the existing cold (-28 ºC) ammonia storage facility located in room and pillar hard rock storage cavern mined in gneiss to propane storage. The analysis led to the development of procedure for the cavern operation conversion.

Laboratory Experience
- For seven years conducted various types of experiments on physico-mechanical properties of rocks including design and improvement of several components of laboratory hardware, preparing numerous technical reports including laboratory tests and data interpretation.
- Hands-on experience with MTS testing equipment and various methods of acquisition of experimental data and computerized data processing in the laboratory as well as in the field.
Field Experience
- Tunnel inspections, management of ground support performance in shafts and tunnels, installation of underground monitoring stations and convergence measurements, installation of surface microseismic monitoring stations, used for the assessment of underground structures stability, field seismic measurements, and evaluation of slope stability.
