Sphere Investments Limited is a West African focused iron ore company which is listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (Code: SPH).

Lebtheinia
Sphere has an exploration licence for EL264 which covers the Lebtheinia magnetite-quartzite prospect. The prospect has a strike length of 24km and is strategically located 50km from SNIM's railway line. In December 2008, following an extensive drilling campaign, Sphere Investments Limited announced a JORC Code compliant Mineral Resource of 2.3 billion tonnes (Bt) at the Lebtheinia Centre Deposit, one of four deposits contained in two adjacent licenses that are 100% owned by Sphere. This maiden Resource includes 1.75Bt of Indicated Resource, removing the requirement for further resource definition drilling previously planned for 2009

Location
The camp site was situated in Libtheinia in the middle of the desert in West Africa (Mauritania) the nearest town (Nouadhibou) approximately 180km from the site. Refer to sphereinvestments.com.au for more details.

Employment at Sphere – Libthenia
Accommodation; offices; workshops and the lab was build onsite to accommodate 120 people. The required construction was build and completed within four months. (This included buying all material needed as well as the construction itself – insulating normal containers for use as bedrooms and offices in temperatures exceeding 48º C).

Emergency Evacuation
Successfully completed a landing strip for small aircrafts if needed for emergency evacuation.

Laboratory
The lab consisted of the following:
* 1mm and 3mm crashers
* 2 pulvarishers
* 2 drying-ovens
* 4 davis-tubs
* Storage facility for 20gram archived samples etc.

Language barrier
The official language spoken by the locals is Hassania but mostly French. To be able to work with, understand and communicate with the labourers I had to learn the language in a very short time frame. To be able to do the sampling of the raw materials I had to be able to count fluently in French which I also accomplished. On average we sampled 150 samples of 50kg per day which constitutes 450m of drilling depending on whether the drill riggs had breakdowns or not.

Working hours and stints
Your day starts at five in the morning and ends at eleven at night. We worked 7 days a week 6 to 8 weeks continuously with a 14 to 21day break.

Day to day responsibilities:

1. Payroll and timesheet – on a daily basis:

* Payout of salaries and resolving relating queries of 76 local labourers.
* Controlling shifts for 2 RC Drilling Riggs and 2 Diamond Drill Riggs working 24 hours a day
* Controlling petty cash for the camp ± 4 000 000 MRO(Mauritanian Ugiya) per month

2. Logistics for Exploration camp of 120 people in the desert which included:

* Water delivery ± 60 000L per day, collection point 27km from the camp(3 trips per day with a 4 hour time frame per round trip)
* Diesel delivery ± 20 000L per Month
* All maintenance material for supplying electricity,
* Servicing vehicles and generators, plumbing supplies for all kitchens and bathrooms respectively and lastly electronics equipment for recreation
* Fresh food supplies, ordering as well as transportation from Nouakchott(300km from site)
* Mining supplies, stock control and ordering from company in South-Africa
* Purchasing of sheep and sheep food for fresh meat daily
* Ordering medical supplies as needed by the medic for on-site treatment of most ailments
* Controlling and managing health and safety issues in the camp
* Catering for and entertaining investors when needed

3. Sampling and surveying

* Collecting and Splitting of mineral samples from drill site 3m composites
* Collecting and Cutting of core from diamond drill riggs
* Surveying and marking new drill sites for riggs using DGPS

New skills achieved
* Learned how to drive a 30ton truck (Actross)
* How to affectively navigate with a GPS and survey with a DGPS
