DETAILED WORK EXPERIENCE
(11/2008 – Present)
HSE Manager
SNC-Lavalin – SaskPower Queen Elizabeth Project, Saskatoon, SK
Currently overseeing all HSE related items on site; a contracting group has been hired to complete the construction of the new Plant, in which I am responsible for overseeing their operations and stepping in when necessary to protect both the workers and the interest of SNC-Lavalin Thermal Power. Working closely with the contracting groups safety department, I have to provided a gap analysis comparison between the clients HSMS and the Contractors HSMS to ensure we are meeting or exceeding the clients standards and Provincial OHS Regulations. I have likewise submitted a Site Specific Safety Plan, Policies and Forms that SNC-Lavalin will utilize on all 3 SaskPower Projects available
(05/2008 – 10/2008)
HSE Manager
SNC-Lavalin – Hope Bay Project, Cambridge Bay, Nunavut
Located approximately 65Km SW of Cambridge Bay, Nunavut – the Hope Bay Project was in the beginning phases of Construction located on the largest gold deposit belt in North America. Scope of work encompassed all aspects of Health, Safety and Environment, including overseeing sub-contractors (and their respective HSE Personnel), regular HSE reports, managing site training, orientations, incident investigations, workplace inspections, incident mitigations, developing additional training programs depending on current needs, creating operating procedures, regular meetings (Construction meetings, Contractor meetings, etc). Upon arrival to the project, I stream-lined and organized the site-wide orientation programs (by taking complete responsibility of it for both Construction and Exploration), properly organized and implemented the HSMS, overhauled incident reporting for the entire Construction group, reviewed all prior inspection reports and followed-up to ensure action items have been addressed, brought together the HSE group to ensure required commitments are being properly accomplished, began creation of a basic Emergency Response Team based on what was made available to utilize, etc. Within a short period of time, a definite improvement in the overall HSE aspects on site was noted, the HSE Team was made more efficient and we saw a significant reduction in workplace injuries/incidents. The work rotation was varied as per site demands, but I most often worked a 4:1 or 5:1 rotation.
(05/2007 – 05/2008)
HSE Trainer & BBS Coordinator
Jacobs Canada – Petro Canada SRU Project, Edmonton, Alberta
Training managers, direct field labour and sub-contractors in various programs; including Site Orientations, OSSA certifications and internal training components. Programs covered include Site Orientation, Fall Protection, Arial Work Platforms (<79 and >80 feet), Flag Person, Respect in the Workplace, Stretch and Flex, Behavioural Based Safety, Safe Plan of Action Reports, Lockout-Tagout, Flag Person, Supervisor Training, Alcohol and Drug Awareness, Respirator Fit Testing, etc. In addition to training site personnel, I likewise develop monthly training calendars, maintain training statistics, review alcohol & drug compliances prior to permitting individuals on site, produce Site ID cards, and complete other items as requested by the HSE Manager. Upon arriving on this project, I reorganized the structure and filing systems of the training department to compensate for deficiencies noted, eliminating the issues surrounding the loss of records and documentation, and maximizing the amount of training courses that can be offered during the time available in the day.
I personally developed numerous training programs for the site, including items such as Behavioural Based Safety Awareness, Flag Person, SPA, etc. I headed the BBS program and implemented components for the project personnel with the aim to reduce incidents and accidents on site and likewise increase near-miss reporting and overall personal safety awareness.
(01/2008 – 06/2008)
Systems Implementation Specialist (Contract)
Farallon Campo Morado Project, Campo Morado, Mexico
Working on contract through MEM HSE & Emergency Services, I was part of the Health and Safety Management Systems creations based on Mexican HSE standards (NOMs) for the whole of the project site, and then travelled to the Mine Camp in the mountains of Campo Morado Mexico to introduce the entire system and specifically implement the Underground portion of the Health and Safety Management System. Through this, I likewise developed numerous training modules for site orientation, underground orientation, WHMIS training, Standard Operating Procedures training, etc and created a management system capable of tracking the entire encompassment of the Underground Safety Program. Trade specific training packages were created to help ease in the orientation and job specific training requirements for working at the Mine Site; based upon the Training Matrix I created specifically for the Underground Construction Phase. I likewise trained the Underground Safety Manager in incident/accident investigations and follow-up, safety inspections and follow-up, Operating Procedure training, electronic systems record tracking, etc. During the time spent at the Project site, I worked closely with the Chief of Safety, the medics, the local workers and the Underground Contractors. Items implemented not only included the basic reporting structure, but also MSDS, Fire Extinguisher logging and inspection, identification and mitigation of numerous hazards both at the Mine Site and the Mine Camp which had been either unidentified or identified but never issued as a work order. Numerous progress report meetings were held to update Management as to the current status of the system and implementations, and a Board of Directors presentation was created and presented during a BoD Inspection Tour of the Project. A 3-day training session was supplied to all Site Supervisors in incident investigations and reporting. Remote assistance from Canada was offered and utilized to assist in the smoothest possible transition of the HSMS for the Underground portion of site.
(03/2007 – 05/2007)
Environmental Coordinator
Western Canadian Coal Corp., Vancouver / Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia
During my short time with this company, I completed their 2006 National Pollutant Release Inventory report for Environment Canada and developed a program that can be used in future years to ease the completion of these annual reports by simply plugging in the appropriate values in the pre-arranged fields (2007 requirements added to the program to prepare them for the next years reporting). I evaluated their current EMS and developed a plan to organize it in a more efficient manner in the hopes of making it ISO 14001 certifiable if they ever required it to be done. Editing of the current Environmental Standard Operating Procedures were started. At the mine site, I worked with the Environmental Superintendent to organize sampling and quality control programs to ensure all government required sampling was indeed captured as per permit requirements (something that was being overlooked at times). Likewise, a comprehensive monitoring program was established and a calibration/maintenance log created for field measuring equipment. A month into my working role with this company I was called upon by a HSE Manager from a previous De Beers Project whom I highly respected and was asked to work for them as a HSE Trainer in Edmonton, which I accepted.
(03/2004 – 03/2007)
Environmental Coordinator
De Beers Canada - Victor Diamond Project, Attawapiskat, Ontario
I transferred in early 2005 from the Snap Lake Diamond Project in the Northwest Territories to the Victor Project in Northern Ontario, for the promotion to Environmental Coordinator. Safety, Health and Environment Management Systems Coordinator, (SHEMS) and Environmental Technician
De Beers Canada - Snap Lake Diamond Project, Yellowknife, Northwest Territories
I started and completed the integration of a new software package (Intelex ISOSoft) into usage to take over the responsibility of the Safety, Health and Environment Management System (SHEMS). This software managed all aspects of the SHEMS, including SHE incident reporting, audit scheduling, inspections, task managing, training records, safety and environmental risk registry, legal registries, etc. Working with both the Safety and Environmental departments, I developed and delivered SHEMS training awareness programs, system software training programs and managed the training records database for all personnel on site. I have a complete understanding of SHEMS and correlating document control, ISO 14001 and compliance requirements. I was appointed Document Controller in August 2004 and was part of the SHE Management Committee which met on a quarterly basis. With my previous experience in managing an environmental laboratory, I officially took over the roll as an Environmental Technician at the same time keeping my position as SHEMS Coordinator. With this dual role, I was required to work a normal 168 hour-2 week site rotation and then work in the Yellowknife office on my 2-week off cycle.
