Recruited and hired as Mine Engineer 3 by North America's largest merchant of iron ore pellets for the domestic steel industry, Cleveland Cliffs. Principal duties and accomplishments at this 150,000 long tons of ore per day mining operation included:
Engineering Design, Budgeting, Scheduling, and Oversight:
• Drilling and Blasting: Blast design, documentation, optimization, budgeting, scheduling, field oversight, and consumables management and control of drill bits, drill steels, and over 2 million pounds of explosives per year, annually budgeted at over $4.6 million. Designed and published monthly explosives and drill reports. Provided weekly and monthly engineering estimates of drilling/blasting production and consumables usage and costs to Mine Accounting.
• Stockpiles and Haul Roads: Designed and scheduled haul road and stockpile development, and provided engineering control for plan execution; also provided engineering oversight of terminal stockpile reclamation to DNR standards.
• Mine Design: Designed 10-15 years of comprehensive blasting and digging grades utilizing Vulcan software.
• Dewatering: Performed groundwater runoff evaluations and mine dewatering oversight for new mining areas.
• Ore Control: Performed in an ore grading and control capacity, and as Engineering/Mining Operations liaison, as required. Created agendas, and ran daily production meetings and monthly 30-60-90-day mine planning production meetings.
• Safety: Provided explosives safety education to drillers, blasters, and shovel runners, in conjunction with explosives vendors and the ISEE local chapter. Scheduled, performed, and documented seismic and airblast monitoring of all production blasts. Created and implemented a new safe handling of misfires procedure. Actively participated in the company-wide housekeeping and safety initiative.
• Inventory Documentation: Provided engineering oversight, scheduling, and analysis of semi-annual pellet inventories, utilizing aerial ortho-photography of pellet laydown facilities in Allouez, Wisconsin.
Ancillary Duties and Projects:
• Provided capital acquisition analysis for justification of a new $4.2 million, 16-inch P&H 120A rotary drill, and participated in the drill's specification and performance management processes. Justified and introduced high-precision GPS navigation and real-time data transfer to the mine's drill fleet, and a new 150-ton lowboy for improved drill transport.
• Actively participated in Cleveland Cliffs' corporate explosives cost reduction and strategic alliance initiative, and in Hibbing Taconite's drill-to-mill optimization project.
• Served as Mine Engineering Department vendor liaison with P&H, Bucyrus, Minnesota Explosives, Viking Explosives, Austin Powder, Cook Slurry, Smith International Mining Tools, Baker-Hughes, and Superior Rock Bits.
• Performed DNR permit-to-mine amendments and annual report support.
• Regularly performed geophysical sampling and statistical analysis, using the Bison blasthole magnetic susceptibility probing system, and drill cone sampling.
• Provided Mine Engineering Department ISO 9000 and ISO 9002 documentation support and participated in explosives and drill bit vendor audits.
• Provided field supervision of drilling, blasting and survey crews, and served as interim Drill and Blast foreman in mine operations.
Computer applications utilized:
• Techbase, Maptek’s Vulcan, Microsoft’s Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Access, Modular’s DISPATCH, and MIMS.
