wheeled vehicle mechanic

I have worked as a wheeled vehicle mechanic for the U.S. Army for 4 yrs.. While in the motor pool I would help with maintaining our vehicles and equipment at deployment status. Since 1st Special Forces Group is a rapid deployment unit, we had to be able to load all of our equipment, to include personnel, on either a plane, boat, or both within 18 hours or less. In order for our vehicles to be put on these forms of transportation, they had to be free of any leaks or mechanical defects that would hinder their operation. On a normal day in the motor pool my duties and responsibilities would consist of assisting the operators of the vehicles and equipment with preventative maintenance checks and services or P.M.C.S. for short. Once a month I would give a class on the proper way to preform a P.M.C.S.. In my class, I would explain the importance of having the operators manual with them while they were doing there P.M.C.S.. I would tell them, "how could anyone memorize everything that need to be checked and the way to check that perticular component when I myself as a mechanic could not remember everything for every peice of equipment". When the master driver would hold a class to liscense new troops and to renew liscenses for soldiers, I was often called upon to assist during his calss. The first part of his class is P.M.C.S. which would take up the entire morning. The second portion of the class would be the road test. We would take the new operators on the road to get them aquainted with the vehicle. Once the were comfortable with the vehicle, we would take them off road to show them what the vehicles were and were not capable of. When I was not giving ar helping with a class, I was in the shop working on our vehicles. I would preform services, brake jobs, suspension work, re-seal axles, install block heaters, change tires, replace rear main seals, set timing, minor engine repair, replace flywheels etc.. I was assigned the new FMTV 5 ton wrecker. FMTV stands for Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles. I attended a 40 hour class on the operation and maintenance of the FMTV wrecker and the rest of the FMTV fleet.

I would help customers with picking the right tools for the job. Like paint brushes, rollers, or sponges etc..
