2003 - Present Research Process Engineer, Imerys Minerals

Key Responsibilities and Achievements

PRODUCT AND PROCESS DEVELOPMENT
- Successfully compared a range of potential chemical techniques to achieve consistent product quality at a calcium carbonate plant in the U.S. The trial results were presented to senior management at an internal R&D conference in Atlanta and the recommended technique was implemented.
- Carried out spray drying trials at a manufacturer's pilot facility to determine conditions and energy input required to generate development product within required specifications.
- Designed and carried out a program of work to evaluate a novel heating process for the production of functional filler particles. Developed an in house analysis technique for particle crush strength and evaluated product in final application.
- Provided technical assistance to a DTI funded nanotechnology project, worked closely with industrial partners during the early stages of the project to develop and produce suitable novel mineral candidates for incorporation into novel clay-resin nanocomposites.

PLANT TRIALS & SCALE UP
- Successfully conducted two plant scale trials in France, worked under a senior engineer during trial 1, then took full responsibility for trial 2. The process involved primary crushing, ball milling, jet milling and air classification.
- Carried out plant audits at two potential supplier sites in France, assessed their ability to supply the required quantity and quality of material, and identified sources of potential process contamination. Recommendations were made to the project manager.
- Co-ordinated plant trials for a novel product at a toll processing facility in Holland, responsible for scheduling trials and ensuring delivery of feed materials, provided technical support during trials. The process involved ball milling and air classification.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT
- Completed the Imerys Graduate Development Programme (interpersonal skills, communications skills, assertiveness, negotiation, presentation skills, team development, leadership skills, project management) and achieved a Postgraduate Certificate in Management Studies (including modules in Management, Business Environment, Finance and Marketing).
- Have successfully managed a range of projects in a logical and efficient manner within the Imerys product development stagegate system. This includes responsibility for effective planning (Gantt charts, project plans) and reporting (written reports for internal publication and presentations).
- Provided training to Chemical Engineering industrial placement students and supervised their work on a daily basis, provided guidance on data analysis and report writing
