Thermal Equipment Engineering Group
As a cognizant engineer of the Thermal Equipment Engineering group, the area of work is on Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG), Steam Surface Condensers, Cooling Towers and Rotor Air Cooler Kettle Boilers. Position involves writing technical design specifications for the above equipments based upon the customer specification (Contract) and a variety of codes such as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) section I (Boiler Code) and section VIII division 1 (Pressure Vessels), Heat Exchange Institute (HEI) standards, Tabular Exchange Manufacturing Association (TEMA) etc.
In addition, responsible for jobs procurement such as the review of vendor drawings, erection procedures, shop fabrication procedure, review and development of P&IDs and associated instruments list. Also participate in vendors bid evaluations, review or proposals technically and commercially in order to select a fit vendor, responsible of project management and review of all vendors deliverables. Responsible for interface with the vendor, A/E and trouble shooting related issues that might arise at site during project commissioning.”
As a group Technical Lead for the Steam Surface Condenser and the Rotor Air Cooler Kettle Boiler Heat Exchangers, I had the responsibility to come up with a standard design for both of these equipments in order to reduce the engineering hours and the cost involved. In addition, I was also involved in standardizing the Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) System used in the Heat Recovery Steam Generator to minimize the exhaust Nox from the gas turbine. I have also been involved in doing some Finite Element Analysis calculations with one of our HRSG vendor to come up with the best Tube to Header Connection and have been published to the ASME committee for their review. Position also involved heavy customer contact centered on bid proposals, vendor specifications and client support. In addition, support to marketing/sales groups in order to secure more orders and applications group during bid proposals stage.
Aside of my office responsibilities, I have been also involved in many of “Site Readiness Reviews”, it is a process in which the responsible engineer goes out to the site and check on the completeness of the equipment and checks for any show stoppers for the operation of the plant. My responsibility involved a complete check of the HRSG, rotor air cooler and the condenser.
One of the main challenges was to come up with a first time engineering Air/Fuel heat exchanger design to be used in conjunction with a Fin/Fan cooler used to heat up the fuel gas for better performance and to set up the control philosophy description for both of these systems and perform site commissioning of the system. The system was used in two different projects in Mexico and were successfully commissioned.
2004-Present
Balance of Plant Group
As a cognizant engineer of the Balance of Plant group, my scope of work included working on Fuel Gas Heaters, Fuel Gas Compressors, Fuel Gas Skid system and system design of main steam, feedwater, condensate and fuel systems. Responsibilities include process engineering/ mechanical engineering, engineering planning and scheduling and technical ordering document generation. My principle output include system design specifications (Design Basis & Functional Requirements), Engineering Flow Schematics and equipment specifications with calculations to support the design. From these documents, Supply Management can procure equipment and systems, and AE can complete the detailed design of the plant with appropriate overview / approval by BOP. My support of the Erection / Commissioning activities at site include walkdowns / inspections, resolution of site issues (questions, changes, performance problems)".
