(June 01 - Sept 01) Cementation Mining – Johannesburg, South Africa

Vacation work. Cementation Mining is a contract company operating within all aspects of the South African mining industry. During the three-month employment invaluable experience was gained in the following: Mechanised hard rock mining at Kroondal Platinum Mine – Rustenburg. Deep hole exploration drilling from surface for Kloof gold mine. Raise boring, from surface and underground. Grout packing for support of a traditional breast stoping operation. Underground exploration diamond drilling and plug construction. Drop raising for the production of ore passes in several deep gold mines. Working for Cementation provided a real insight into numerous aspects of the mining industry. In addition to this, experience was gained of working in extreme environments and ground conditions, including the single deepest shaft in the world, at a little over 3000 metres.

(Jan 99 - Sept 99) Kernow Medical Supplies – Truro, Cornwall

General office work which included managing customers accounts, ordering stock, telesales and invoice production. This gave me valuable insight into the financial side of running a business and also dealing with large multi-national companies through to customers in their own homes.

(Sep 98 - Jan 99) Turtle Bay Beach Club – Watamu, Kenya, East Africa

Project work, which included setting up a water testing regime to monitor the water quality of the surrounding marine park. My time spent in Kenya not only opened my eyes to a variety of cultures, but also gave me experience in dealing with those cultures and the logistics associated with operations within a third world country.

Recreational Interests and Activities

Scuba diving has been a long-term interest which, culminating in being awarded a PADI Divemaster certificate in 1998. I now assist in student training and have lead dives in both the UK and Kenya. I have also maintained an active interest above the water. Sailing has always been a past time and I have sailed to several different countries within Europe from Cornish waters. During my school days I played rugby, football and badminton, and represented my school and county at different levels. Since attending the School of Mines, I have played squash to maintain my fitness. I also enjoy long distance walking expeditions in so called “wilderness country”. Such expeditions have included a five-day self-sufficient hike within the Dartmoor National Park. Other outdoor activities include rock climbing, skiing and snowboarding, although these have been less frequent.

Travelling is another important part of my life, and a strong factor in my decision to study Mining Engineering. I have visited many countries within Europe, and also the United States. In addition to this I have spent longer durations in Kenya and South Africa. I believe my experiences from travelling have given me a more rounded attitude towards life.
