Apr 2001 -Jun 2001 RIO TINTO EXPLORATION, Andra Pradesh Diamonds Project, India,
Consultant Geologist

* Joined the Andra Pradesh Project, based in Darwin, to assist in the supervision the gravel and loam-sampling program with the aim of identifying kimberlitic pipes and dykes and to delineate areas of diamondiferous alluvial placer deposits. Duties were varied but largely involved supervising up to 4 teams, consisting of up to five persons per team, for the collection of quality gravel and loam samples.
* The geological terrain varied from basement, with or without recent black soil cover, to thick sedimentary and intrusive sequences overlying basement.
* Developed a sampling, data storage and dispatch system to prevent errors from compromising the integrity of the samples.
* Data was collected both on hard copy and on hand held electronic devices, which we modified especially for the sampling program. Applications used included MS Access, Excel, Word and MapInfo.
* Supervision of field camps of up to 25 Indian Nationals, and most logistical aspects of the project including accommodation, messing, field equipment and vehicle maintenance.
* Demonstrating and attempting to instil to many unskilled persons, an applicable and workable safety ethic and culture. This addressed such matters as the wearing of personal protective equipment, safe working practices and incident reporting. Also adapting, where necessary, Rio Tinto's safety systems and procedures to those required in a very dynamic exploration environment such as that found on this project

* Altering the priority of certain key areas and sampling schedules to ensure the safety of sampling teams in areas of known Naxalite activity. Ongoing acts of terrorism by the Naxalites were commonplace in the Andra Pradesh and Karnatica tenements.
* Since the program was based around sample sites being accessed largely by 4X4 vehicles in rural areas, a knowledge and appreciation of the environment was essential. Many sites were located on agricultural land consisting of paddy fields and grazing areas. Being so close to the monsoon season the landowners were very sensitive to any field activity that may be detrimental to crop yield.

Sep 2000-Apr 2001 RIO TINTO EXPLORATION, Peake and Denison Project, Copper-Gold,
Consultant Geologist

* Target generation by means of geological field mapping, geophysical surveys (gravity and induced potential), analysis of mineralisation styles of similar geological settings, historical document searches and rock sampling within the Peake and Denison Iron Oxide/Copper-Gold prospect in South Australia.
* Assessment of drilling methods appropriate to successfully drill test the targets generated.
* Evaluation and selection of drilling contractors based on safety systems, quality of equipment, experience of drill crew and overall performance related issues.
* Draughting of drill tenders and ensuing contracts for a mud rotary pre-collar and diamond drilling program.
* Liaising closely with the Traditional Land Owners through a legal intermediary to secure land access and to regularly inform the relevant persons as to the status of the project. Employment of two persons from the Traditional Land Owners community as field assistants to assist with the rehabilitation of the tenement during and after the drilling program. This involved training in rehabilitation techniques, safety awareness and off road driving skills.
* Implementation of short-term contracts with local businesses for miscellaneous land disturbing activities such as access tracks, sump construction and freighting/logistical support.
* Management of a remote field camp of up to 20 persons. Contractors on site included two geophysical contractors, one geotechnical drill rig, one mud rotary drill rig, one diamond drill rig and various visitors from Rio Tinto Exploration and relevant South Australian Government representatives.
* Collation, analysis and management of geological, geophysical, geochemical and geotechnical data. Information was gained from geological mapping, rock chip and diamond core logging; assay results and data generated from gravity and IP surveys.
* Ensuring that the Occupational Health and Safety standards of Rio Tinto Exploration Pty Ltd are implemented and adhered to. Also ensuring that all environmental issues were addressed, not only with regard to flora and fauna but also that the integrity of the artesian aquifers was not compromised during the drilling phase of the program. A unique Environmental Management Plan was written specially by our team for the Peake and Denison Iron Oxide/Copper-Gold project that was submitted to the South Australian Mining Department with the Application for Work Approval forms for the project.

Apr-Sep 2000 ARGYLE DIAMONDS,
Deep Drilling Project, Rio Tinto Exploration.
Consultant Geologist

* Database management and basic 3-D modelling of the Argyle orebody using Vulcan software.
* Geological and Geotechnical logging and measurements of drill core on a metre-by-metre interval. This was to accurately log and attempt to assign grade to lithology within the lamproite pipes.
* Assessment of the underground potential, rock types and grade predictions for the Mine Geology Department on site.
* Management of two UDR 1000 Diamond drill rigs. Drill holes were multi-directional, inclined and straight; they were completed by various methods. These included the use of wedges, flexi barrels, chrome barrels and extensive use of 'Navi-Drills' to reach targets.
* Close liaison between the drill crews and the Geology/Production teams was essential. The drilling had to have minimal effect on production, which necessitated frequent meetings with Argyle staff and mining contractors to achieve this.
* Data entry, collation and modelling had to be of the very highest standard since Ashton Mining personnel were carrying out a 'Due Diligence Study'. The mine was, at the time, part of a takeover bid by both Rio Tinto and DeBeers.
* Regional exploration within the mining leases involved liaison with Traditional Owners and field inspection of gravity and magnetic anomalies. Some basic field geological mapping and sampling was also needed.
