* Manage and operate all activities and functions of USG's underground Locust Cove Mine & Mill Dept. in support of a 1M sq. ft. gypsum wallboard production facility located in Saltville, Virginia.
* Established, developed safety programs, and maintained safe working conditions and practices for employees. The Mine/Mill complex operated from 1995 to 1998
without a lost work day injury. In 1998 the Locust Cove Mine was awarded the Holmes Safety Foundation "Sentinels of Safety Award" as the best safety record for an underground metal/non-metal mine in the United States.
* Performed mine planning, geological exploration and mapping of the deposit, and capital appropriation program to increase safety for employees, and lower delivered rock cost for manufacturing plant. Through implementing these projects the rock cost was lowered from $13.25 per ton to $9.50 per ton. The mine produced approximately 300,000 tons of raw gypsum rock for annual saving in excess of $1M per year in direct cost.
* Implemented an aggressive exploration program consisting of core drilling and underground directional drilling to delineate the gypsum orebody. Expanded proven gypsum reserves from 10,000 tons to 1,500,000 tons. Based upon indications of drilling program USG purchased additional mineral properties adjacent to mine holdings. Negotiated the purchase and development of this acquisition.
* Designed and implemented a computerized mobile equipment record keeping system on mine equipment to develop a preventative maintenance program.
* Designed, implemented, and trained employees in company's first mine monitoring system which was used to detect fire, gas levels, conveyor operation, and mine pumping system.
* Directly supervised 10 salaried professionals and 76 hourly employees.

* Direct line supervisory responsibility of engineering staff, surveyors, mine production and maintenance foremen. Coordinated efforts of mine personnel and front line management in surveying, driving of development tunnels, roof control, blasting, haulage, crushing, hoisting, and repair of equipment for a 300,000 ton per year underground gypsum mine.
* Directed geological exploration, core drilling, and mapping at a multi-level, modified room & pillar extraction method that utilized sublevel stoping and backfilling.
* Directed, scheduled, and responsible for maintenance duties on mine fleet of mobile equipment including: rock haul trucks, LHD's, roof bolters, exploration drills, mechanical scalers, air compressors, conveyor system, power system, and feeder breakers used for crushing mine run rock.
* Performed analysis and tests of mine roof conditions, implemented new methods of roof support: (fully grouted resin bolts, split sets, pneumatically applied shotcrete over tensar wire mesh screen, and square set timbers to hold unstable ground).
* Responsible for employee compliance with USG company safety program, Federal and State government laws and regulations. (Employee safe practices, safety huddles, Job Safety Analysis, compliance with all air and water pollution permits, underground fuel storage, pressure vessels, explosive storage, handling, and accounting).
* Recommended, researched, and implemented the USG Company's first use of rubber tired mechanical scaling equipment to replace hand scaling of roof rock after blasting.

* Designed, tested, and implemented new method of drilling pattern and replaced electric blasting caps with safer NONEL system of blast initiation.
* Installed system of handling bulk ANFO for blasting agent instead of employees handling in 50 lb. bags.
* Supervised emergency water control chemical grouting to stop inflow of ground water into the mine.

* Performed surface and underground survey control in thin seam room & pillar gypsum mine.
* Designed, wrote a capital appropriation, and constructed an underground mine refuge chamber to provide miners a sealed protected location with outside oxygen, water, survival material in event of fire or mine emergency.
* Established, selected, trained, and purchased mine rescue equipment for two full underground mine rescue teams for the Oakfield Mine.
* Completed an investigation and the emergency clean-up of a hazardous PCB spill at mine surface substation.
* Under the direction of the mine manager prepared mine's capital project submittals to corporate directors for approval. Typical projects included mobile equipment, construction of new underground shop, rehabilitation of mine shaft, upgrade to mine track haulage system, and new mining method using conveyor belts and feeder breakers in a panel belt arrangement.

* On site manager for surface placer gold mine located at Slate Creek, Alaska. Located in Alaska Range 300 air miles SE of Fairbanks.
* Planned and directed the efforts of 43 personnel in all matters relating to logistics, safety, housing, camp operation, mining, beneficiation, recovery, security, and transport of 8800 Troy ounces of gold during the 1985 Alaska mining season. Personnel included: cooks, engineers, surveyors, pilots, assayers, equipment operators, laborers, electricians, welders, maintenance, expeditors, gold house operator, foreign nationals, and various contractors.
* Built 47 miles of ice road from the mine to the paved road located at Chistochina, AK. Supervised the transport of heavy mine freight prior to thaw. Typical freight included fuel, oil, gasoline, steel, crushers, tires, and various supplies needed for mining season.

* Constructed a dirt runway, 3500 linear feet @ 10% slope to allow access by air service.
* Pioneered first use of Alluvial Dredges Limited jigging plant system for processing and recovery of gold, in conjunction with screening plant and sluice boxes.
* Fine gold recovered from the jig plant was transported to gold house for additional concentration using Diester tables, mercury for amalgamation of fine gold in concentrate, and pouring of gold into Dore bars for shipment to refinery in Fairbanks.
* Responsible for the security and accurate accounting of all gold recovered, poured, and transported to refinery.
* Provided daily reporting to management on all aspects of production, gold recovery, conditions, and progress of mining plan vs projections.

* Prepared detailed plans to obtain a gold placer mining prospecting permit on a fee simple mining claim surrounded by the Clearwater National
Forest. Agencies required to approve plans: Idaho Dept. of Water Quality, US Fish & Wildlife Service, US Forest Service.
* Performed initial site survey, produced a plane & topographic map, conducted geologic sampling, produced an economic evaluation of the results of the sampling, and procured equipment to process alluvial gravel based on results of sampling program.
* Funding was provided based on initial sampling and mine start-up commenced. During the initial season, supervised 12 hourly miners, working on two shifts, and produced approximately 600 ounces of gold in the first season.
