Skills, experience and attributes

Experience
Through my geological roles at TanzaniteOne I have developed an excellent computer literacy in various software packages such as Surpac, Micromine and Microsoft Office, as well as through my MSc studies including Datamine, Isatis Geostatistical software and various geotechnical packages. Through the use of Surpac I have produced the first computerised model of a structurally complex metamorphic orebody which has proved invaluable to mine planning and scheduling as well as providing a tool for greater interpretation of the geology. Also my analysis of grade data and production data is critical to the effective running and profitability of the mine and has been critical in our improved performance since my arrival.

These skills have complemented my geological skills which have involved me in both underground geological work and exploration work in the field, often in challenging environments and on greenfield sites whereby I have had to organise and liaise with contractors. I have had an integral role in the planning, both long and short term, the mine development and production regularly liaising with the mining engineers. Through my senior role I have had to develop sound financial skills and awareness in setting and monitoring budgets and expenditure for the department and on projects such as diamond drilling as well as contributing to discounted cash flow models. Where possible I have tried to implement new techniques and technologies to the mine which has seen me trial GPR and implement the first geotechnical program on the mine Also, all of my work has been completed whilst adhering to health and safety standards and with an awareness and sensitivity to the environment.

Leadership
Through managing the geology department of the business that monopolises the tanzanite industry from having worked my way up quickly from junior geologist I have developed excellent motivational and managerial skills whilst displaying qualities and geological knowledge which has earned me the respect of older, more experienced geologists and surveyors that are now working for me. My success in this has been proven by the mine having its most productive year ever in 2007 in terms of carats produced with 2008 currently on target to improve again on this record.

Management
As the person responsible for the successful running of the geology department I am expected to have complete control of all the geological and survey data and interpret it correctly to enable me to direct the mine's short and long term plans whilst maintaining an important balance between underground development and production. This work is extremely challenging and ultimately rewarding due to the unique nature and complex geology of the orebody, with my work having a direct influence on the performance of the mine, especially in terms of production and profitability. Co-ordinating and scheduling the work of, and motivating the various staff within my department effectively are critical to achieving the department's targets.

Communication
As someone with a large impact on the whole tanzanite industry, successful communication has become an integral skill. I have addressed media groups and journalists in Tanzania as well as international media such as Time Magazine on the unique story of tanzanite, both geologically and with regards to the business and its future. I often present to investor groups and Tanzanian politicians who are influential to the operation as well as geological and gemmological academics and professionals all of which has vastly improved my professional conduct as well as enhancing my confidence and abilities to accurately and professionally represent a listed company at a variety of levels. During my time in Tanzania I have also been sensitive to a wide variety of cultures and traditions as well as learning Swahili to a reasonable standard.
