Terry Gattinger worked for Underground Mining Services in Africa from the 21st October 2002 until July 2006.
During that time he demonstrated his skill and experience in all aspects of underground long-hole drilling as well as his man management; organisational expertise and work ethic.

Terry's role was as coach / trainer in mines where there were problems in the mines long hole drilling operations. Being Africa these problems were never simple, they often involved multiple problems; for instance:-lack of personnel; management inexperience; lack of planning; total incompetence.

Terry's task; when being seconded onto a mine; was to determine the skills and experience levels of management and labour, the mines infrastructure and logistics capability and the suitability of the long hole drilling program to achieve the mines targets. Terry would then develop and implement a plan based on his skills and experience to introduce sustainable improvements where needed. The UMS philosophy was to train by the process of ¡¥show and tell¡¦ thus Terry would be a ¡¥hands on drilling manager and driller¡¦ to both demonstrate the best operating practice and train personnel in its application.

Terry worked on a number of mines in South Africa and Zambia and was always able to improve the long hole drilling performance in volume and accuracy. His natural man management skill and his total commitment resulted in those working with him showing a keen desire to learn what he was able to teach them at all levels.

For instance he was sent to Mopani Copper Mines, Mufulira Mine on the Zambian copper belt when the mine was only achieving 21,000 drilled metres per month with their long hole drilling fleet. The mine target was 44,000 metres per month. With a reduced drilling fleet, training and incredible determination and commitment Terry was able to get the mine to achieve 3 consecutive months of over 44,000m in 7 months. Terry recommended changes in the long-hole planning, bit selection, sharpening and bit management and as a consequence was able to reduce the drill metre costs.

I have no hesitation in recommending Terry Gattinger for any role on any mine in the long hole drilling division.
