A long-range frigate with capabilities encompassing air Defence, surveillance and reconnaissance, HMAS Parramatta is fitted with state of the art technology and maintains round the clock Seahawk helicopter operations in support of various Defence activities.

Snr Maintenance Quality Inspector

Reported to the Senior Maintenance Manager, Trent Kerrison, with a mandate to oversee maintenance management and quality assurance.

Responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of a $44 million Seahawk aircraft, directing a specialist team of highly skilled aviation technicians.

Deeply involved in the service, repair and fault diagnosis of landing gear and braking systems, air-conditioning, pressurisation and ice control systems, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, fuel systems, turbines, weapons systems and associated support equipment.

Highlights

Supervised maintenance requirements, assisted external auditors in quality assurance inspections, conducted technical inspections, managed resources, interpreted Defence maintenance policies, and ensured aircraft availability and adherence to civil and military regulations.

Managed all aviation stores, ordering, return and procurement. Planned routine maintenance allocated tasks and managed workflow. Gained significant exposure to operational logistics processes, working with the ship's Logistics Management System.

Analyzed failure data and provided guidance on various servicing techniques for aircraft parts. Ensured all work complied with standards set by the Director General of Technical Airworthiness.

Posted to the North Arabian Gulf for six months, playing a role in the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Iraq. Provided ongoing observation and security for critical Iraqi assets such as oil platforms.

Supervised all before and after flight inspections, fuelling and aircraft movements. Approved aircraft maintenance documentation checks prior to release for flight. Conducted on-the-job training for junior Aircraft Technicians and Aircraft Fitters at both flight line and workshop level.

Regularly briefed management on maintenance policy, aircraft capabilities and technical matters. Liaised with specialist contractors, and other external agencies for procurement of aircraft parts.

A registered maintenance organisation, 816 Squadron operates 16 Sikorsky S-70B-2 Seahawk helicopters in support of Navy's frigates, providing state-of-the-art anti-submarine and surveillance capabilities.

Invited to take on this high pressure role by Workshop Maintenance Manager Dave Janszen, and given the charter to coordinate all major servicing across a $90 million aircraft fleet.

Scheduled maintenance activities to meet organisational priorities and minimise workplace disruptions while taking into account human and physical resource requirements.

Highlights

Responsibilities included removal, inspection, repair and installation of aircraft safety, rescue and survival equipment and the manufacture, assembly and modification of aircraft structures and equipment mounting systems.

Gained significant exposure to all facets of aircraft engineering, including most engine, airframe, pneumatic and hydraulic systems. Developed an extensive range of trade skills, carrying out forming, bending, lathing, welding, soldering and brazing.

Ensured the ongoing airworthiness of operational aircraft, including configuration management, materiel states and compliance with DGTA directives. Established a reputation for working to high standards and getting the job done within tight timeframes.

Achieved a high level of aircraft availability by making more efficient use of time and making changes to inventory holdings to ensure commonly used spare parts were readily available.

Managed staff training, including technical assessments to ensure standards were met. Provided guidance on the assembly and disassembly of mobile maintenance facilities and ongoing logistics support during deployments.

Asked to come on board by Senior Maintenance Manager, Colin Meyers, to install, modify and test a range of airframe, engine and avionics components.

Coordinated scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and conducted Quality Assurance and Final Inspections. Planned and managed flight line routines and maintenance.

Highlights

Technical responsibilities encompassed inspections, servicing, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of aircraft engines, auxiliary power units, rotor systems, power train systems and associated airframe and systems specific electrical components.

Worked with aircraft fuselage, rotors, fixed and movable flight control surfaces, aircraft bleed air, hydraulic and fuel systems.

Responsible for the operation and management of ground service equipment, including hydraulic power rigs, diesel power generators, hydraulic jacks and air-conditioning units. Worked with infrared cameras, chaff and flare dispensers.
