GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE MIDDLE EAST TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY
ENGINEERING FACULTY IS ACCREDITED BY ABET (USA)
------------------------------------------------------------------------

The language of instruction at METU is English.
Near 20,000 students registered at METU in the 2001 academic year.
Approximately 15% of these are enrolled in graduate programs.

Between 800 to 1500 students from as many as 50 different foreign countries
attend METU each year.

Undergraduate and graduate students from a number of countries attend METU
as "Special Students" or "Exchange Students" for a semester or a year. METU
currently has active Student Exchange Programs with several foreign
universities.

METU has 37 undergraduate programs carried out by 34 departments within five
Faculties. Additionally, there are three Graduate Schools, one Vocational
School and a School of Foreign Languages.

METU's academic year is divided into two semesters. The first term of the
academic year generally begins the last week of September and ends the
middle of January. The second term begins the middle of February and ends
the middle part of June. METU also has a summer school with regular courses
and an International Summer School with courses of special interest to
international students.

In keeping with METU's international perspective, a little over 10% of the
faculty are visitors from abroad. Each year, approximately the same
percentage of the Turkish faculty go to foreign universities or research
institutes as visiting faculty or researchers. Around 70% of METU's
full-time faculty have studied abroad and most of these have obtained their
graduate degrees at a foreign university.

METU strives to maintain a high standard of education by international
standards. The departments in the Engineering Faculty have been evaluated, at
METU's request, by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology
(ABET),(LOCATED IN THE USA), and their programs were given approval by this
Board. It was declared that METU has an education as same as the best
universities of The USA.Because of METU's effort to maintain international
standards, the Faculty of Engineering was awarded in 1977 the "Silver Badge
of Honor" by the UNESCO International Centre for Engineering Education and
the
"Meritorious Achievement Award in Accreditation Activities" by the American
Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.

METU is one of Turkey's most competitive universities. Of the students
taking the National University Entrance Examination each year, over 1/3 of
the 1000 applicants with the highest scores attend METU. Because demand to
attend METU is so great, many of METU's departments have accepted only the
top 1% of the approximately 1 million applicants taking the National
University Entrance Examination. Over %40 of METU's students go on to
graduate school.

The campus is located on 11,000 acres of forested land and includes Eymir
Lake, about 20 kilometers from the center of Ankara. The lake is available
to METU students for rowing, fishing, picnicking and general recreational
activities.
Bus service is provided from the METU main campus and locations in the city
to the lake.

A wide variety of sports facilities are available to METU students on campus
including gymnasiums, tennis courts, football fields, jogging trails,
Olympic size indoor swimming pool, an outdoor swimming pool. Off campus ,
METU has lodges at Elmadap, 30 kilometers from the METU campus, and at
Uludap near Bursa where mountain climbing in the summer and skiing in the
winter are possible.

Throughout the academic year students can enjoy the art exhibits, music
events and a variety of social and academic activities available on campus,
many held in METU's new Convention and Culture Center The highlight of the
year's social activities is the traditional International Spring Festival
held in May.

Estimated living expenses for students is minimally $350.00 to $400.00 (US
dollars) per month. Books and other administrative fees are approximately
$100.00 to $150.00 per semester. Special Students pay $100.00 per credit
hour.
With one course generally 3 to 4 credit hours per semester, special students
can expect to pay from $300.00 to $400.00 per course.
