2004 - 2005. US Geological Survey, Minerals Information Team, Reston, VA. Geologist. Published reports on mineral commodity trends and statistics. Served as program representative and mineral commodity specialist for zinc, cadmium, indium and germanium metals. Responsible for providing expert advice to government, industry, and general public inquiries on mineral industry issues (25%). Researched, synthesized data, and generated various reports on mineral commodities, including historical background, trends in use and production, and geographic distribution (50%). Digitized geologic features using GSMap and ArcInfo. Imported data, created coverages, created attributes and attributed features, cleaned and merged coverages, edited coverages, and produced maps to check data (ArcInfo)(70%). Interpreted regional geology based on past mapping, sampling, field notes, and topography (25%). Compiled and edited databases (5%).

2002 - 2004. Self Employed– NW Natural Wonders, Vancouver, WA. Developed custom maps, graphics and field trip guides using ArcGIS 8.2 and other software for lectures and field trips for a diverse range of clientele. Presented thematic talks and lectures on Pacific Northwest geology ranging from one to several hours to groups such as Tacoma Community College. Led half day to week long field excursions to sites of regional geologic interest for groups ranging from middle school science classes to private groups such as Smithsonian Journeys and Elderhostel.

1997 –2002. USGS Cascade Volcano Observatory, Vancouver, WA. Geologist. Developed maps and graphics using ArcGIS 8.2 (ArcView and ArcInfo) for exhibits, fact sheets, and presentations (20%). Responded to media inquiries and provided interviews related to geologic hazards in the Pacific Northwest (20%). Presented information to the general public related to volcano hazards, the eruption of Mount St. Helens, and gave volcano monitoring demonstrations at the Johnston Ridge Observatory, Mount St. Helens (20%). Used extensive knowledge of geologic and volcanic processes to explain ongoing processes at Mount St. Helens and other Cascade Volcanoes to a variety of media, civic, governmental, and educational groups (15%). Enhanced visitor experiences by working with naturalists at Mount St. Helens National Monument to enhance their understanding and presentation of volcanic processes, monitoring techniques, and other ongoing scientific research in the area (10%). Conducted geologic field trips for educational groups (5%). Coordinated outreach and research activities between the USGS and USFS at Mount St. Helens (5%). Assisted with various ongoing scientific research including levelling and EDM surveys (5%).

1996 –1997. University of South Florida, Tampa, Florida. Teaching/Research Assistant. Mapped and sampled lava flows on Koryakskiiy Volcano, Kamchatka. Analyzed volcanic rocks using a Fisons ARL-DCP-OES, a Fisons VGR Plasmaquad ICP-MS, and Sr-Nd-Pb isotope column separation techniques. Iterpreted major and trace element geochemical data in relation to subduction zone related volcanic and petrogenetic processes. Instructed lab courses in structural geology, mineralogy, and geology for engineers.

1993 –1995. New Mexico Institute of Mines and Technology, Socorro, New Mexico. Research/Teaching Assistant. Designed filter sampling aparatus for the collection of volcanic aerosols and gases from Mount Erebus, Antarctica. Collected and analyzed gas samples using a Dionex 9000i ion chromatograph and neutron activation. Measured sulfur dioxide emissions at Mount Erebus using a Barringer Correlation Spectrometer (COSPEC V). Callibrated COSPEC sulfur dioxide data at Navajo Generating Station (Page, Arizona) in conjunction with NASA/JPL TIMS measurement experiment. Modeled plume dispersion of volcanic gases from Mount Erebus using EPA-approved air pollution dispersion models. Instructed lab courses in igneous petrology, optical mineralogy, sedimentation and stratigraphy, and introductory geology.

1992 – 1993. U. S. Bureau of Mines, Anchorage, Alaska. Geologist. Managed field gear and logistics for remote field camp in the Brooks Range, Alaska, for the 1992 and 1993 field seasons. Collected field samples and geologic data pertaining to Ag-Pb-Zn exploration and evaluation of the Colville Mining District. Assisted with geologic mapping of mineralized areas. Drafted daily reports. Performed input and analysis of geochemical data using Lotus.
