Macarthur Coal Exploration Team

I have been privileged to be part of a very diverse and productive team solely focused on the exploration and development of Macarthur Coal's mining and exploration leases. This role allowed me to diversify my exploration experience over a number of mine sites at various stages of development. This role had a significant focus on safety management, drill supervision, rock and geophysical interpretation and logging, and required well rounded problem solving skills. I found the formal environment of the Bowen Basin mine sites coupled with my years of international experience has honed my communication and team leadership skills. This role requires a high attention to detail, core and chip data interpretation, and data flow and correction management.

Geoscience Graduate Program With Xstrata Coal Queensland

As one of three graduates taken into the Xstrata Geology graduate course I have had the opportunity to work on a number of different projects in the 13 months. For 9 months I worked in Wandoan as part of the exploration team where I worked on rigs creating and logging geological data. This data was then processed from entry into Acquire and correlated in preparation for modeling in Minex.

My next rotation was into the Oaky Creek No1 Mine as a Mine Geologist where I focused on coal extraction and quality. I have gained exposure to the challenges which are faced in running a major underground coal operation. I have also been exposed to the geological requirements of the role including dilution measurement, mapping of the LW face, mapping and interpretation of faults and joints, and core interpretive skills. In addition a huge emphasis of the role focuses on safe and responsible leadership, but also economic and personal accountability for all tasks.

My final year project for my Engineering degree incorporated significant GIS visualisation, modelling, and GIS analysis to create suitable presentable datasets. The project required I work closely with drill core loggers, gold ppm data, topographic information giving me an introduction of working with data from a number of variable spatial sources.

My role was to aid in the collection of positional data using a total station and RTK GPS equipment. Surveying requires great attention to detail and the ability to work under deadline pressure. Responsibilities included:

* Reading and creating maps and documents which were later presented to clients.
* Communicating clearly to allow technical problems and queries to be understood and presented smoothly.
* Working in a team based environment, where time management and reaching set goals was critical

Engineer and Survey Operator for the Historical, Nautical and Archaeological Foundation Inc. (HNAF)
Catanduanes, Philippines
In 2004 I took a leave of absence from University and worked on a small island in the Philippines with HNAF alongside the Philippine National Museum in the exploration for Spanish Galleon Shipwrecks which were known to have sunk in the 1500's.

Exploration:
* Responsible for the collection, post processing and analysis of all hydrographic surveying data that was collected over a 6 month period.
* This task required long hours in the field on the boat, attention to detail of maintaining the magnetometers altitude and preventing any underwater collisions.
* Post-processing required analysis of the data - and a basic understanding of geomagnetism.
* A strong knowledge of surveying software 'Hypack', and also 'QINSy' to a lesser degree.
* Equipment maintenance - boats, boat engines, desktop and laptop computers, and an endless number of electronic devices.

A number of specific traits highlighted by my work in the Philippines with HNAF are:
* High Standards: the ability to maintain an exceptional standard of work even in trying surroundings.
* Planning: the appreciation of logical and comprehensive planning before the work begins.
* Communication: the ability to communicate ideas and plans clearly on all levels.

My position as Vice President of the Melbourne University Underwater Club has allowed me to help run a small company with 200+ members. Some of the places I have lived and traveled extensively include: Philippines, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Laos, Thailand and Japan

Scuba Diving - I have been involved with the Melbourne University Underwater Club for the last 8 years, where I have been increasingly involved in the organizational side of the club as a member of the committee. Just recently finishing up as the Vice President I had the responsibilities of organizing interstate trips, choosing boating equipment and boats, and ensuring that our 250ish members are following safe practice guidelines.
