CAREER HISTORY – SUMMARY
I am a Zambian and I hold a B.Sc. Mechanical Engineering degree obtained from Southampton University, in England, in 1980. I am currently doing Masters in Business Administration.

Upon graduation in 1980, I joined Zambia Copper Mines, Mufulira Division, as a Trainee Engineer. I underwent two years of supervised training in all the mine workshops until I eventually started objective training to the position of Section Engineer (mechanical) in the Power Plant. In 1982, I was promoted to this position which I held until 1985 when I resigned to join Lever Brothers, in Ndola.

I joined Lever Brothers in 1985, initially as Projects Engineer, and within two years I was promoted to Chief Engineer, running all the engineering operations (mechanical and electrical) of the company which included manufacturing lines, utility support services, and maintenance workshops.

I resigned in 1991 following a better offer to join United Bottlers (Coca-Cola – Zimbabwe) as Plant Engineer for both the Bulawayo and Gweru factories. I held this position for 9 years until year 2000 when the political situation and subsequent economic effects on industry, forced me to resign and leave Zimbabwe.

The Copper Mine Power Plant included large centrifugal compressors and huge pipelines for all the mine compressed air generation and transportation to underground. Other plants included boilers, steam turbines, water reticulation, air blast circuit breakers and welding and fitting workshops.

Apart from production line equipment, the two factories (Lever Brothers and Coca-Cola), had huge utility plants i.e. Air, Water, Refrigeration, Steam, Electrical and instrumentation reticulations, and also maintenance workshops for machining and fitting. I therefore, have years of experience in workshop and insitue plant maintenance.

Since year 2000 I have been based in United Kingdom studying for an MBA degree and doing part time work as Technical Sales Manager for Servicetecnic UK Limited, based in London.

Responsibilities:
Reporting to overall general manager of two factories based in Bulawayo and Gweru. I was responsible for all engineering operations of both plants.

My main responsibilities, among others, included:
1) Maintenance of Plant And Equipment: planning, and ensuring efficient undertaking of planned daily, weekly, annual, emergency maintenance programs. Ensuring spares and skills availability and taking responsibility to use hands on approach for more technical, expensive, and dangerous tasks. I monitored costs and recommended economic replacement programs.

2) Maintenance of Buildings and Property: Using skilled staff to ensure factory ground were painted, roofing, doors, gutters, furniture were maintained.

3) Plant Installation And Disposal: I prepared long and short term plans for replacement of plant for standardisation and also for re-investment. I evaluated plants for asset register and capital budget proposals and made recommendations accordingly while adhering to company policy. Planned new projects and got drawings for new installations and carried out pre installation and pre commissioning procedures, as per manufacturer's specifications.

4) Stores Control: I was monitoring stock levels of critical spares and materials to ensure optimum levels to avoid shortages in line with the company's working capital policy. I identified what spares we could manufacture locally and ensured cost saving opportunities were utilised.

5) Projects: I proposed departmental projects, and undertook capital projects. My involvement would start from planning, specifying, drawings, tendering, manufacturing, installation and commissioning. I would liaise with all other departments (buyers, accounts, drawings, stores) and Contractors and Suppliers under my control.

6) Budget Preparation and Control: Engineering department usually consumes substantial financial resources, and as Head I was responsible for budget preparation, ensuring approval, then control by taking usual corrective actions to ensure compliance to company plans.

7) Man Management and Team Building: In my department, I ensured recruitment, discipline, industrial relations, motivation, promotions, training, upward and downward communications.

8) Subordinates: I had 50 subordinates, 5 directly reporting to me (2x Factory Maintenance Managers, 1 X Property Foreman 1 X 1 X Foreman Utilities 1 x Foreman Forklifts).
