SIGNIFICANT ACHIEVEMENTS
- Appointed Rescue Coordinator for the Central Queensland Region. This encompassed 7 large regional Fire Stations and all their auxiliary stations. Coordinated all Vertical Rescue training and conducted forums for all Instructors in the region
- Redeveloped the Fire and Emergency Crews at Ok Tedi Mining and increased manning from 40 to 60 persons to adequately service the site. Introduced a marketing and retainer package to encourage participation. All new and existing personnel then received extensive skills training/retraining from me, which is critical in a remote location to cover all incidents where a Fly-in-Fly-out roster is part of the business.
- Conducted a thorough fire and safety audit of the OkTedi Mining site and specified extensive on-site maintenance and repairs to existing equipment to bring equipment to an acceptable level to manage incidents. Budgeted for replacement equipment where necessary and if critical, arranged for the immediate purchases. eg hoses and fire appliances. Capital replacement was reduced by implementing extensive repairs and maintenance, with ongoing planned maintenance.
- Taken ownership of the Ok Tedi site Fire Suppression and Alarm Systems after an audit revealed no sprinkler or alarm systems being correctly maintained, if in place at all. Substantially reduced the critical risk to personnel, company assets and production loss. I have now employed a certified Alarm and Sprinkler Technician to maintain the Ok Tedi site systems.
- Identified the need for substantial upgrading of Fire Fighting PPE at the Ok Tedi site, as crews were at risk in the current situation. Budgeted and purchased US$ 54,000 of new PPE items.
- Designed and purchased new fire appliances to suit the environment and terrain at the Ok Tedi site – this new design will now cover residential, industrial and aircraft incidents.
- Coordinated the training of specialist personnel as Servicing Technicians for all breathing apparatus used at the Ok Tedi site. These staff were trained in Australia. When I was appointed to the position at Ok Tedi Mining, all BA sets were out of service and the BA compressor was sent to Australia for a major service as it was 3 years out of service.
- Reduced Ok Tedi Mining Fire Extinguisher maintenance costs by US$ 115,000 by training the on-site fire crews to recharge and maintain equipment and dispense with Contractors to site for this function. Also centralised the recharging areas to further reduce operating costs.
- Implemented a Vertical Rescue training package at the Ok Tedi site and increased the team from 12 to 20 personnel, after I conducted an audit, which identified inadequate training and manning levels. There is now appropriate coverage to allow for the Fly-in-Fly-out roster and staff turnover.
- Developing an Aviation Rescue Team. Completed and passed as a qualified Dispatcher and identified 6 personnel who successfully passed as Team Members in a specialist Aviation Rescue Course which was conducted in June. Budgeted for course costs and US$18,000 for helicopter hire for on-site training. In developing the strategy, I have considered the remote location of the Ok Tedi site in PNG, difficult and dangerous terrain, difficult weather conditions and the environment.
- In charge of a recent recover operation at Ok Tedi when the major dump failed and D11 Dozer with operator still in cab went over the edge and came to rest 350mtr below. Due to weather conditions and unsafe location the operation lasted 15 day with assistance organised from all over Australia. The final recovery was completed by Myself and 3 Team Members from the Aviation Rescue Team using a Bell 212 and 206 helicopters.
