As Deputy General Manager for Ok Tedi Mining, improved productivity by 100%. Implemented clearly defined production goals, preventive maintenance procedures, and cost control measures, including a reduction in force. Reduced operating costs by 10-15% and streamlined entire operation, from top to bottom. Generated sufficient cash flow to provide funds and attract new investment capital for expansion. Expanded operation is profitable.
As General Manager for Southern Peru Copper, implemented facility upgrade that improved production by 40%. Following major upgrade of facilities in operating year 8, production increased 40% and investment pay back was 45 days.
Professional Achievements
Held wide-ranging responsibilities for mining operation in Papua New Guinea. In addition to technical management of one of the Pacific Rim's largest gold mining operations also responsible for the entire town site of more than 10,000 population, including schools, hospitals, warehousing, security and safety, power and other utilities, and all transportation facilities.
Restructured operations to increase production and ensure profitability. Study revealed that doubling production rates would be optimum to repay investments and generate profit. Located capital assets at discounts to hold capital costs to 20-30% of plan and reduce start-up schedule by 2 years. Operation now profitable at about 8% return on investment after repaying more than $2.2 billion capital investment and expansion costs.
Led start-up team of expatriates and nationals to establish successful mining operation in remote location. Design capacity achieved in 3 months and continued to improve by average 4% per year for more than 7 years. Following major upgrade of facilities in year 8, production increased 40% and investment repaid in 45 days.
Managed privatization study project for CVRD, Brazil's largest mining company. MRDI hired to evaluate economic value of privatizing the company, which included mining and processing of iron, copper, gold, phosphate, and other base metals. Reviewed all existing processing facilities, proposed facilities, and capital investment programs. Developed financial and risk assessment models to evaluate all operations and projects.
Prevented multi-million dollar loss through detailed review of client's proposed copper project. Led team analyzing the geological modeling, mine plans, and metallurgical results for feasibility study of a major proposed project in Chile. Developed financial model to evaluate various project scenarios. None proved to be economically viable and client stopped venture, averting major losses.
Designed engineering concepts and processes for $1.8 billion mining project. The Collahusi copper project in the Andes of northern Chile, was conceptualized as an underground, high grade, and low tonnage operation. An MRDI team determined the resource would be profitable only as a high tonnage, low-grade facility. Provided conceptual designs and capital and operating cost models. The mine now operates profitably.
