TERTIARY EDUCATION:
National Diploma for Technicians (Geology) (4 year course) at Pretoria Technikon (now Tshwane University of Technology) in 1971.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:
1. Geological Survey division of the Department of Mineral and Energy Affairs (now Council for Geoscience) for 13 years in all regions of South Africa. Gained experience in the Geophysics, Groundwater (Hydrology) and Engineering Geology Sections in geological, geophysical and hydrological related tasks. Also gained experience in mapping, surveying, electronics, shot hole blasting, drilling control, core logging and drawing. Also carried tasks and tests as well as utilized equipment in Rock and Soil Mechanics.

2.Worked for company producing dimension stone from granite rock mainly for the export market from a number of quarries in the then Northern Transvaal (north-eastern South Africa) for 2 years. Quality control of blocks produced and supervision of block dispatching by road and rail. Also did general surveying of quarries and acted as Mine Surveyor producing plans and maps for Government Department Mines Inspectorate approval.

3. Grade Controller with the Geology Department of Amcoal (now Anglo Coal – Anglo American company) -owned opencast mine, Kleinkopje Colliery near Witbank, South Africa which produced coal for internal and export markets. Was responsible for the demarcation and observation in the field of coal reserves as determined from computer-derived models. Coal subsequently mined and delivered to the processing plant was reassessed by myself using computer programmes such as geological modeling. Much liaison was carried on a daily basis between myself, mining, coal processing and surveying departments to ensure the correct product was mined and the product delivered was correctly processed. Other tasks included audit of reserves mined and reserves remaining.

4. Geologist for ITM Mining a sucessful opencast diamond mine situated in northeast Angola from January 2000 to April 2001. This mine exclusively mined for alluvial diamonds. Tasks included field inspections, field sampling, prospecting and planning as well as supervising staff carrying out these tasks. Operated and utilized a small prospecting plant which included a washing plant, jigging plant and dedicated sorting room with myself sometimes being the only technically trained staff. However, my main tasks were centred around various computer generated reports, graphs and tables. Some of these had to be produced on a daily basis while other reports were produced on a monthly basis and also in Portuguese. Set up and maintained a computerized database of data concerning diamonds mined, mining operations and geological information. Carried out some groundwork in an attempt to introduce a geological modeling computer programme. This involved establishing a survey database, keeping of production records and researching of available computer modeling programmes.

5. Ran my own businesses for three years which were sold or closed down.

English – fluent. Afrikaans (similar to Dutch) – good. Portuguese – basic working knowledge
