DE BEERS CONSOLIDATED MINING LIMITED (Feb 2001 - present)
I am a professional scientist [Pr.Sci.Nat] and employed in Mineral Resources Department of De Beers as an Operations Research Officer. My key responsibilities to our department are:
- Identify, define, re-define, re-focus, design, implement, modify, analyse, develop and maintain concepts and applications in the area of operations research. This requires process simulation, mathematical modelling, optimisation, planning, scheduling and decision-making by using conventional and unconventional techniques.
- Define standards, do strategic evaluation, compose training and presentation that falls within operations research.
- Address queries that involve operations research.
- Software evaluation, implementation and development in operations research.
UNIVERSITY OF THE NORTHWEST (2000 - 2001)
My key responsibilities to the department were:
- Teach Numerical Methods II and Numerical Analysis III, Ordinary Differential Equations III.
- Set-up the computer laboratory for the Department of Mathematical Sciences.
- Others - administration duties (e.g. represent the department in selected meetings, tutoring and provision of network support to other staff members on matters concerning departmental computers).
LYNX GEOSYSTEM S.A. (Pty) Ltd (1998-1999/2000)
While busy as an MSc student, I was employed by Lynx Geosystem SA as an Analyst Programmer. My key responsibilities were:
- Design and development of software in the field of Operations Research.
- Sales demonstrations of newly developed software products to clients.
- Provide technical support to the clients mainly in the mining industry.
- IT systems implementations and maintenance thereof.
ANGLO AMERICAN (Vaal Reefs Mine): 1993 – 1995
In 1993 – 1995, I was employed by Anglo American Corporation (Pty) Ltd as A Trainee Metallurgist. My key responsibilities were:
- Operation of the metallurgical plant.
- Supervision of production teams.
- Management of daily production with respect to quality and output.
- Optimisation of plant resources (i.e. manpower planning and scheduling).
DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING (1992-1993)
After completing my B.Sc degree, I was employed by the Department of Education and Training as a science teacher at Mophate High School at Bothaville. I taught Mathematics to Standards 6 – 10. The overall pass rate in Mathematics was improved by 20% in comparison to the previous years.

INFORMAL EXPERIENCE
- I did support work for Wits' Computers & Network Services Department and School of Computational and Applied Mathematics (Postgrad labs).
- I tutored Applied Mathematics to Science and Engineering students at levels I and II (WITS) (1995 - 1998).
- I tutored both undergraduate and postgraduate students computer packages (word processing, spreadsheets, internet and programming languages – Turbo Pascal, Matlab & Maple) (Wits) (1996 - 1998).
- I taught Matric-Mathematics to teachers who were upgrading their education under TOPS (Bothaville) (1992).
EXTRAMURAL ACTIVITIES
I enjoy working with computers, and I always keep abreast with computer software developments. I make a deliberate effort to learn outside my scope to gain overall mastery of computer technology and what it can offer.
In about 90%, of my schooling career, I got positions 1 and 2.
1984: I was given a literature book (viz. Drama Workshop II) as a prize for The Best Natural Science Student in Std 9.
As a young scholar, I used to formulate Mathematical solutions and models that were published by Prof. H.B. Webb of the University of Cape Town in Mathematics digest.
1987: I was given a Mathematics text-book (Introduction to Calculus and Geometry by UCT's Maths Digest) for my contributions.
CAREER ASPIRATIONS
I am fully competent in applying IT. I believe I can make significant contribution to team work and to the organisation as a whole. I am a qualified professional optimisation scientist - I can formulate and model Operations Research problems, solve them efficiently, make proper analyses and decisions, implement and modify solutions and problems. Hence I can work as an analyst too.
I am a fast learner, a complete independent thinker and creative. I often take initiatives.
My main objectives are:
- Derive business solutions and required expectations through comprehensive functional knowledge and superior technical methods.
- Apply my skills in information conception, formulation, analysis, solving, technology solutions, data analysis, information services, organizational planning and design, and practical decision-making or recommendations.
- Discover reliable mathematical programming techniques that will sustain the demands of the next decades and centuries.

- In 1987 I enrolled at the University of Durban-Westville for a BSc in Electrical Engineering.
- In 1990 I enrolled for a BSc degree (Applied & Pure Mathematics) of which I graduated in 1992.
- In 1993 I enrolled with Technikon Witwatersrand as a Metallurgist student. I got distinction in Statistics I and Maths I.
- In 1995 I enrolled for B.Sc (honours) degree in Computational Mathematics (Control Theory and Optimisation) at Wits University. I graduated in 1995.
- In 1996 I enrolled for M.Sc degree in Computational and Applied Mathematics. My direction of study was Optimisation. I graduated with a First Class. My Research Report was Microcluster Minimization with Local Search (avg. 86.5%), and in Lie Group Analysis of Ordinary Differential Equations (80%). My aggregate for my M.Sc is 77.93%.
