Carried out surface exploration by geological mapping on different scales, sampling of possible mineralised zones, identified the auriferous nature of banded magnetite quartzite (BMQ) band for a strike length of 3.5 km and width also proved. The subsurface exploration was carried out through drilling to discern the third parameter of the orebody (depth persistence) to infer the geometry of the orebody and proved upto 200 m vertical depth. Geochemical, geophysical and Airborne geophysics data has been utilised to understand the subsurface geology especially in the covered terrain. A sizeable gold deposit of 11892 kg of gold metal content which could earn Rs.715/- crores has been proved in BMQ rock in Chinmulgund block, Shimoga schist belt of Archaean granite-greenstone belts Karnataka. The genetic aspects have also been studied through ore microscopy, sulphur isotopic and fluid inclusion studies (1992-1997).
Gold mineralised zones on the surface extending for 2.5 km strike length have been identified in BMQ bands in Forest block, Chinmulgund, Shimoga schist belt, which are discontinuous in depth (1997- 1999)

SUMMARY OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT WORK:
* The pioneering work with systematic and modern approach in exploration resulted in establishing a sizeable gold deposit of 4.6 million tonnes of ore in Banded Magnetite Quartzite in Chinmulgund block, had revolutionised the concept of gold exploration in India. This work had awakened the geoscientific community to look into the new environment of BIF, a potential zone for gold mineralisation, when the traditional quartz lode gold is getting depleted. This had substantially enhanced the gold reserve of the country by contributing 11,892 kg of gold, which could earn Rs. 715/- crores approx. It has attracted the attention of several domestic as well as foreign mega-mining giants (WMC, BHP, Indo-Australian Resources of Australia and PALMER RESOURCES, Canada etc). BGML was granted mining lease for this area. MECL carried out the detailed feasibility studies and recommended for mining operations.
* Identified a new ground for Gold Exploration in the silicified zones in Bababudan Quartzite formation in Chitradurga schist belt at Halekallu prospect with gold assay values ranging from 10ppb to 6.22 ppm during the preliminary investigation carried out in 2002 to 2003. For the first time identified a visible gold grain of 1mm diameter in this rock. This is very significant as it is a new environment for gold mineralisation in India.
* Besides this gold mineralisation has also been identified in the BIF formation in Jajikalgudda prospect, Chitradurga schist belt with gold assay values ranging from 10ppb to 5.5ppm.
