Employment history:
1987-1988
Completed compulsory national service in the South African Navy.
1988-1990
Employed by Anglo American as a field geologist. I was responsible for the planning and implementation of all aspects of a prospecting program in the Northern Transvaal, South Africa. Duties included the planning of sampling programs, the interpretation of geochemical data from soil, rock and stream sediment surveys, geological mapping, siting of percussion and diamond drill holes. The job involved the co-ordination of the activities of several teams of field officers and laborers. A wide range of commodities were targeted. These included Pt within the Bushveld Igneous Complex, Ni associated with massive sulfides in ultra mafic Bushveld satellites, Archean greenstone gold and gold within early Proterozoic conglomerates. The work involved compilation of historic data, target generation, planning and management of the work programs. South Africa has a large cultural diversity and a requirement of the job was the ability to work with people from very varied ethic backgrounds and levels of education.
1991-1992
Completed a master’s degree in hydrology in the Department of Agricultural Engineering at the University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. The topic of the research was the simulation of the export of phosphorus, nitrogen and herbicides from agricultural management systems. In particular, I was involved in the development of a computer hydrological simulation model in FORTRAN 77 for use in the determination of the pollution threat from agricultural chemicals. Skills gained during the two year M.Sc. course included an extensive knowledge of GIS, soil pedology, soil chemistry; report writing skills, computer literacy, computer programming and a good knowledge of multi-variant statistics.
1992-1995
Employed by Umgeni Water, a large water utility in South Africa, in their pollution prevention department as manager of the GIS department. I was involved in quantifying the effect of various land-use practices on the chemistry of water in streams and rivers in the area under the control of Umgeni water, most of Kwazulu-Natal. Use was made of remote sensing images, the ARC/INFO GIS package and river water quality surveys to locate problem areas and map land-use in the catchment. A large part of my responsibilities was the establishment of a GIS station for use by Umgeni Water. I had the task of setting up a spatial database storage system for storing and visualizing data derived from the very extensive catchment water quality-monitoring program. This involved solving both hardware and software problems and the development of an extensive knowledge of the ARC/INFO GIS package and Unix.
1995-April 1997
Employed by Anglo American (Central Africa) as a senior exploration geologist in Zambia. Duties included being responsible for a number of field teams involved in exploration work within Anglo American's prospecting licenses in Zambia. This involved developing conceptual targets, the planning of regional geochemical surveys, interpretation of geochemical data, planning and the logging of drill holes, geological mapping, generation of new targets etc. I was responsible for the development of a digital storage system required to facilitate the easy access and interpretation of the vast and varied data sets produced during any modern day prospecting program. All data derived from satellite imagery, geophysics, field mapping, GPS positions, drilling data etc. were combined in a G1S system to produce a very powerful manipulation and visualization tool. Use was made of Avenue; an object oriented programming language developed by ESRI for GIS to add to the capabilities of the existing software. I have developed an add on exploration module in ArcView that enables the easy processing of daily exploration data. The software has the capability to produce geochemical and geological drill hole sections and ore reserve calculations.
June 1997- July 2001
Employed by the Indonesian subsidiary of Herald Resources as a senior geologist. Initially I was involved in managing field operations on the Kumba COW, NW Kalimantan and in April 1998 moved to North Sumatra to manage work on the Dairi COW. As the most senior person on site I was responsible for management of all aspects of the exploration program.
My duties in Kalimantan included managing several field teams involved in grass roots exploration of a 3600 km2 piece of land in North Western Kalimantan. Alluvial gold has been recovered from this part of Kalimantan for several hundred years. The hard rock source of this gold was thought to be from epithermal Au, porphyry copper-gold or Au- skarn systems associated with tertiary dacitic intrusives. A stream sediment sampling and geological mapping program was completed over the area. Data from the program was combined with airborne geophysics in ArcView to aid in the planning of follow-up operations. A number of targets were identified and tested by drilling. All data was integrated in the GIS database allowing the visualization and manipulation of the varied datasets. My time in Kalimantan coincided with major social upheaval in Indonesia and as the most senior person on site I had the task of keeping the program on track through this difficult time. This required working very closely with the local Dyack people and the Indonesian officials.
For three years I was employed as the site manager of field operations on the Dairi COW. I was the only expatriate on site and was responsible for managing all aspects of the exploration program. This included training local Indonesian staff, dealing with local and regional politics, planning and implementation of the exploration program and setting up and managing the geological database systems. Initially we targeted Carlin style sediment hosted Au within the basement Permian rocks of north Sumatra. During the initial stages of the grassroots program we delineated a very large Pb/Zn anomaly within streams and soils. It soon became evident that we had discovered a major new Zn/Pb Sedex province. Subsequent drilling of geochemical and geophysical anomalies proved up an indicated resource of 10 million tons of base metal mineralization grading 16% Zn and 9% Pb, the first Sedex style Zn/Pb deposit in South East Asia. Under my supervision the prospect became a significant Zn/Pb discovery in Indonesia. During this period I attained very valuable experience managing an unfolding mineral discovery under very difficult conditions in the current Indonesian political environment. I attained a high level of proficiency in Bahasa Indonesian and was often called upon to negotiate with local leaders and government officials in their native language.
July 2001-June 2002
Completed a graduate diploma in computing at the Curtin University of technology, WA. The course covered most of the computer science disciplines and included modules in the principles of procedural and object oriented software engineering; Java and C++ programming languages; database management systems as implemented by the Oracle DBMS; foundations of computer science; Unix system program design and Perl and Unix shell programming. I have an average of 72% for the course.
June 2002 – Present
Employed by Sons of Gwalia, a mid sized Western Australian gold producer, as a senior geologist, spatial data, in their technical services division. The company is involved in brown fields exploration for Archean gold in three project areas. A very large database of exploration data has been collected. I have the task of putting together an integrated data management system that can be used to identify new targets within a heavily explored area.
The job has two main aspects. The first, managing the company GIS system and secondly working on the company Oracle drilling and sampling data. The exploration data management system is currently undergoing a process of improvement. The GIS system used by the company has been upgraded from ArcView 3.2 to ArcView 8.2. I have had the task of implementing the change over. Identifying areas where the new technology can lead to improvements in business practices and training of the staff in the new system. I am in the process of developing the GIS to add value to the current information. The idea is to develop systems to define areas of effective and ineffective drilling, prospectivity etc.
The drilling database is currently stored in Oracle and exploration staff make use of Data shed as a front end to access the data. This whole system is in the process of being revamped and is being ported across from Datashed to Acquire in Oracle. A major part of my job has been setting up the new Acquire system and porting the data across to the new system.
