Overview: One of the top fifteen gold producers world wide, situated at 14,000ft on the northern perimeter of the Himalayas in the Kyrgyz Republic, Central Asia. Mining at a rate in excess of 75Mtpa to produce 650,000oz per annum in extreme conditions. Kumtor is one of the most advanced operations in this, or any, part of the world. It offers a technological, social and political challenge that demands strong management due to personnel and government agencies.
Achievements: Increased production from 27,000BCM/day to in excess of 75,000BCM/day through efficiencies with minimal increase to capital equipment while keeping increase to total mining costs at 10%; reviewed mine plan to accommodate latest geological and financial information, negotiated with government agencies to have reduced reserves accepted; through hands on training programmes and mentoring, was able to reduce expatriate engineers and geologists from 7 to 3 and replace with trained national professionals, with no loss in productivity or effectiveness, in this period there was only an overall 25% increase in staff; managed department to six-year LTI free status – strong emphasis on safety; through technical excellence and acumen was able to plan rehabilitation out of debilitating rockslide that threatened to close mine; and, nominated for Innovation Award from Parent Company, Cameco Corporation, for "world first" dust control system – use of snow machine.
