My responsibilities cover business unit # 2 or area II. This covers desilication, digestion, evaporation, and facility 40 ( heat exchangers ).
When working maintenance I am in charge of a crew consisting of 15 to 25 men who work on evaporators, heat exchangers. I also carry a crew of mechanics ( 4 - 8 ) consisting on the work load. My job is to oversee their safety and maintenance on such equipment as previously listed as well as digester feed pumps, slurry pumps, strong liq. pumps, sump pumps, and caustic pumps as well as drilling rigs for horizontal and vertical heaters. It is my duty to plan and organize all cleaning on vessels and maintenance such as welding, in my area. Not only do I work with sherwin employees, but contractors as well. It is my responsibility to make sure all equipment is locked - out and tagged properly and ready to work for my crew.
On the production side I oversee a crew of 10 men. It is my duty to make sure production is in flow and safety is of much importance. In digestion the purpose of heat recovery digestion is to extract or dissolve the aluminum which is in the form of a hydrate from the bauxite slurry. I oversee the proper use of temperature in the digester vessels, sweetening slurry, which is added in mid-range flash tanks. My area is also where the condensate is made for boiler water used for steam and electricity. Heat transfer tasks involved steam at 600, 300, and 50 pound steam. Duties also include to oversee the caustic transfers and acid cleaning on facility 42 (evaporation/ 1-9 units)

Responsibilities include oversight of asbestos abatement projects, lead abatement projects, mercury abatement projects, collecting personal air samples on Sherwin Alumina Plant employees and area air quality samples at job locations.
