•    Member of three person Project Management Team responsible for the planning and development of Freeport-McMoRan's $760 million Main Pass Sulfur Mine. •    Directed multi-year Strategic Planning for Oglebay Norton’s four business units. Supported planning with market research and analysis financial modeling, and economic evaluations of potential alternatives.

•    Developed concept and negotiated terms of joint venture leading to the development of the Main Pass Sulfur Mine. Negotiated the joint venture for the development of the oil and gas reserves with the Main Pass Mine.

•    Originated program to identify and evaluate potential acquisitions for Oglebay Norton through market and financial research and analysis. Constructed financing alternatives model for acquisitions.

•    Established parameters, produced supporting financial model and negotiated settlement of litigation of a disputed production contract for Unocal's Wyoming uranium mine and mill complex with a public utility resulting in award of $117 MM to Unocal and elimination of future legal risk.

•    Negotiated the sale of marine assets for Oglebay Norton netting $2.2 MM in excess of the scrap value.

•    Planned and directed exploration program and preliminary mine development of Worsley Alumina Joint Venture for Reynolds Metals in Australia. Initiated geologic exploration program for gold in laterite resulting in the discovery and development of the Boddington and Mount Gibson gold mines.

•    Prepared comprehensive study of Freeport-McMoran’s sulfur transportation system for potential acquisition.

•    Initiated and implemented “Value Added Management” system at Oglebay Norton. “Value Added Management” (also known as “Economic Value Added” or Value Based Management) is a management system linking financial performance, strategic planning, and unit performance to incentive compensation to increase stock value.

•    Originated and implemented merger and acquisition evaluations for Molycorp subsidiary of Unocal, including identification and financial analysis of candidates. Evaluated and defined target minerals for exploration programs. Reported to Unocal’s Executive Committee for acquisitions and mergers.

•    Prepared and presented Molycorp's initial, post-acquisition, Strategic Plan to Board of Directors of Unocal, Molycorp's new parent company, resulting in change in Unocal's intentions for mining company mergers and acquisitions, and Molycorp's exploration program. Prepared and presented subsequent Strategic Plans as the company's goals evolved.

•    Initiated, evaluated and negotiated the purchase and sale of mineral properties and assets for Reynolds Metals Company.

Project Coordinator - Main Pass Mine Project Management Team 1990 - 1992
Project manager responsible for marketing and finance sections of project feasibility study. Direct team of employees and contractors for the finance, accounting, administration, communications, cash management and project management systems activities for the development of the Main Pass Sulfur Mine. Project completed on schedule and within budget. Company representative for the Main Pass Joint Venture Policy and Management Committee.

Joint Venture Negotiator/Representative 1987 - 1990
Developed and directed small team of staff to negotiate and write a complex joint venture agreement to explore for offshore sulfur reserves. Successful negotiations and subsequent exploration resulted in the Main Pass discovery, the largest Frasch sulfur reserves in North America.

Manager Financial Analysis 1987 - 1990
While negotiating the Main Pass mine joint venture, managed small team of financial analysts producing industrial and agricultural minerals segments of strategic plan and merger and acquisition studies of mining and related companies. Team supported planning and M & A activity with extensive market research, financial modeling and studies of potential acquisitions and undeveloped resources.


MOLYCORP, subsidiary of UNOCAL CORPORATION, Los Angeles, CA 1980 - 1987

Responsibilities included Mine Manager, Manager of Business Development, Environmental Manager, and Minerals Economist. As Mine Manager, responsible for all aspects of an inactive uranium mine and mill. As Manager of Business Development initiated acquisition activity, including market research, financial analysis and modeling. Also responsible for corporate Strategic Planning, directing feasibility studies, and asset divestitures. Negotiated $117 MM settlement of uranium mine litigation. Managed environmental permitting and compliance for new and existing mines and expansions as Environmental Manager; also responsible for government lobbying. As Mineral Economist conducted mineral market and financial studies, prepared Strategic Plans and identified and evaluated potential acquisition candidates.

REYNOLDS METALS COMPANY, Richmond, VA 1975 -1980

Project Exploration Manager, Perth, Western Australia 1977 - 1980
Directed all aspects of exploration program in Australia. Managed Worsley Alumina Joint Venture bauxite exploration program. Responsible for local joint venture negotiations and relations, and coordination with the state government in Australia. Revised and directed exploration program and management changes resulting in the delineation of bauxite reserves in excess of requirements for mine development. Managed program that discovered the Boddington Gold Mine in Western Australia; mine has produced in excess of 300,000 troy ounces per year.
