Experience 1999 to date Lihir Management Company Geotechnical Superintendent Responsible to the Manager Mine Technical for all geotechnical design and investigation and all aspects of the management of the Geotechnical Section. Major projects completed include the integrated geotechnical/geothermal assessment of the Phase 5 Lienetz pit expansion. An assessment of dynamic stability of the offshore stockpile including the susceptibility to liquefaction of seafloor sediments and completion of the South Wall Cutback design. Initiatives currently being implemented include direction of the development of an integrated FLAC3D and "fine mesh" Discrete Element geothermal model to assess the changes in the geothermal system for the next 5 years of mining and to predict likely areas of "boiling" behind pit walls and below the pit floor and the impact on stability. Installation of a robotic automated prism monitoring system, installation of a GPS displacement monitoring system, installation under Blow Out Protection of high temperature/pressure vibrating wire piezometers, development of a high temperature inclinometer, installation of a micro-seismic monitoring system to study the potential for the management of the risk of hydrothermal eruptions in the pit, installation of a strong motion seismograph network to monitor impact of earthquakes on structures in the mine, investigation into the influence of high temperature and 2 fluid phases on pit wall stability, management of a scoping study to investigate the engineering limits to the construction of a dike structure across a sector of Luise Harbour. Management of a pilot study to assess the stability of deep submarine spoil stockpiles and the risks for tsunami generation. Responsible for the recruitment and training of PNG National staff geologists.
1998 to 1999 Senior Geotechnical Engineer Responsible to the Geotechnical & Dewatering Superintendent for all aspects of pit wall design, procurement and installation of monitoring equipment, geotechnical investigations for phase development of the mine (mapping and drilling) and foundations associated with infrastructure. Supervision of 2 national employees and an expatriate engineering geologist. Major projects completed include an assessment of Ultimate Pit, Seawall Design, implementation of a seismic hazard assessment for the mine, investigation program for South Wall Cutback design.
1996 to 1998 Golder Associates Perth, Australia Senior Geotechnical Engineer Responsible for the management of geotechnical studies associated with open pit and underground mine feasibility and design. Main clients include: - WMC Gold, CRA, Sons of Gwalia, Anaconda Nickel NL.
1993 to 1996 Geotechnical Engineer Responsible for mining and civil geotechnical studies including investigation and assessment of tailings dam stability, open pit and underground mine stability and design studies and the analysis of data from diamond drilling, outcrop and open pit mapping throughout Western Australia, Northern Territory and Indonesia. 1990 - 1993 Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation Ltd Sydney, Australia Geotechnical Engineer Completed geotechnical investigations of a civil and environmental nature in Australia and the United States. Responsible for the assessment of a proposed re-alignment of the South Coast Railway from Waterfall to Thirroul, in NSW to the original line constructed in the 1880's. Included the assessment of the stability of existing rock cuts, support requirements for tunnels and embankments. Also responsible for the contract supervision of the installation of 40, 1000 tonne, permanent rock anchors which formed a major component of the Googong Dam remedial works programme, ACT. 1987 - 1990 Hollingsworth Dames and Moore Cairns, Australia Geotechnical Engineer Geotechnical assessment of at least 22 major mining and civil projects completed in Australia and Papua New Guinea with work experience covering the evaluation of rippability using seismic refraction techniques, geological mapping, mine and civil slope stability analyses, the design of rock anchor remedial measures and groundwater resource evaluations. Investigation of foundation conditions and provision of piling parameters for several multi-storey projects in Cairns, Lae and Madang. Projects include:- Misima Mine in PNG (Assessment of the risk of failure of the highwall), Stoney Creek Rock cut, Jagifu Pipeline (PNG), North Cairns Water Reservoir Stability Study, Cairns International Airport, and Nautilus Building Cairns.
1986 - 1987 Commonwealth Government, Australian Construction Services Victoria, Australia Junior Geological Engineer Responsible for geotechnical investigations at various Commonwealth Government installations including the Jervis Bay Re-armament Wharf which involved both offshore and onshore drilling. Victoria Barracks Re-development, Melbourne involving the commissioning and use of a high pressure pressure meter for assessment of deep foundations in Melbourne Mudstones. Assessment of the causes of excessive motion in the Control Tower, Point Cook RAAF Base. A team member involved in the investigation and assessment of the available groundwater resources on Cocos Island, Indian Ocean. Responsibilities included geophysical (resistivity and seismic) mapping of the fresh water lens.
