EMPLOYMENT HISTORY
May 2004 - to present Explosives Supervisor / Shotfirer
Blasting Services Ltd, Alfreton, Derbyshire.
Blasting Services are one of the countries leading contractors for drilling and blasting, providing the complete package in conjunction with the parent company Exchem Explosives. The company at present has five Atlas Copco L6 & one L8 drilling rigs covering South/West Wales and the Bristol area.
Since joining the company I have been firing shots of anything between 5,000 to 55,000 tonnes of rock using mainly Exchem's multiblend emulsion based explosives.
Also I have been appointed as Explosives Supervisor by the company at several of the Quarries; this means I have overall responsibility and control of explosives on the day of the blast.
March 2004– May 2004 Shotfirer
Saxton Drillers, Redruth,Cornwall.
During my time with Saxtons I was employed as a spare Shotfirer to cover three of their Open Cast Coal sites in the South Wales area.
The company runs mainly SK 25's & 40 drilling rigs (two per site) and blasts on average 160,000 cubic metres of rock per week, sub contracting to Celtic Energy.
As part of my duties I was appointed as storeman, responsible for issuing detonators and primers to the Shotfirer, also maintaining stock levels to ensure continuity of service to the client.
December 2003–March 2004 Explosives Supervisor (Fixed Term Contract)
Ronez Quarry, St.Sampson, Guernsey.
Aggregate Industries quarry in Guernsey were going through a change in their management structure, this meant they had to appoint an Explosive Supervisor to cover this period, being asked if I was interested in the position via an old work colleague, I accepted.
On arriving at the quarry it was plain to see the need for change, the present Shotfirer only fired on average five holes per blast, there was a need for secondary breakage on a daily basis, using a drop ball due to oversize in blasts, unnecessary movement of drilling rigs also loading machinery because of inadequate faces and environmental problems from the blasting operations.
As a result of my time spent at the quarry and working alongside the new management team, they were able to fire blasts of sufficient tonnages to minimize the movement of machinery, producing up to a weeks output from one face. Due to better fragmentation the need for secondary breakage also reduced, requiring the drop ball to work once a fortnight and turning the direction of the faces also reduced the vibration problem.
August 1996 – December 2003 Explosives Supervisor/ Trainee Foreman
Taylor Woodrow Construction Limited,
Brynhenllys OCCS,
Palleg Road,
Cwmtwrch,
Swansea.
During my employment firstly as a Shotfirer/Storeman with Taylor Woodrow firing on average 20,000 cubic metres per week, I progressed to being appointed as Explosive Supervisor. The blasting would sometimes require the need for two RBH 30 drilling rigs to be working.
I had the responsibility to ensure the rigs had sufficient areas to drill, the blasts were fired to specification and in the right place to maintain production levels of coal output.
During the last twelve months on the site I took on the role as trainee foreman. This meant I was responsible for machine movements as well as the above.
March 1994 - August 1996
Shotfirer General shotfiring and storeman duties
Saxton Deep Drillers
Main duties were the same as my most recent employment with the company, except the work load was greater. On one particular site we had three sometimes four rigs working, firing anything from 50,000 to 250,000 cubic metres per week.
1989 -1992
