CIVIL ENGINEERING; LAND SURVEYING; COMPUTER AIDED DRAFTING (CAD):
Supervise a field party engaged in measurement of boundary, control network, construction, and hydrographic surveys under supervision of a professional land surveyor (PLS) and professional civil engineer (PE); civil survey computer aided drafting (CAD) technician.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Use and care of survey instruments, tools, and equipment; knowledge of laws, regulations, rules, principles, and practice of architecture, civil engineering and land surveying; knowledge of algebra, geometry and trigonometry. Exercise of judgment using guidelines, procedures, and manuals to determine the best approach to data collection and staff assignment in land surveying and civil engineering field operations, without immediate access to a supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Two to four years experience as civil engineering and land surveying field party chief, instrument man, and rod man; supervisory ability; training ability; education, experience and training equivalent to land surveyor in training (LSIT).

AutoCAD Land Desktop 2007 (LDT); Carlson SurvCE; Tripod Data Systems (TDS) Survey Pro; Trimble Survey Controller; Topcon TopSURV Windows CE, TopNET CORS; Leica TPS and GPS; Pentax PowerTopoCE; Bentley MicroStation; Earth Gravitational Models (EGM96, EGM06); Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS); Digital Elevation Model (DEM) topographical 7.5-minute data series; Digital Terrain Models (DTM); Digital Line Graphs (DLG); NAD83; NAD27; WGS84; UTM; NAVD88; NGVD29.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Record field notes using architectural and civil engineering drafting standards; monitor preparation of topographical maps; consulting with contractors, land surveyors, civil engineers, and architects. Real property boundary surveys to determine location of property lines, public rights-of-way, easements, and monuments; research of legal description, deeds, ordinances and plats. Transportation surveys using third order triangulation and station and offset for centerline control; civil engineering construction staking for placement of utilities, roads, curb and gutter, foundations and steel structures. Energy pipeline centerline control reconnaissance surveys. Surface mine surveys to determine position and volume by monitoring hinge point and catch point of cut slope. Control surveys for aerial photogrammetry. Resection for LIDAR orientation systems. American Land Title Association (ALTA) surveys. Hydrographic surveys (onshore; upland) to determine bottom position and elevation. Knowledge of tide, current, and wave data; dead reckoning; piloting; celestial navigation.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Metes and bounds; Public Land Survey System (PLSS). Remote sites; onshore; travel for extended periods; extreme altitude; all weather bivouac (110F to -20F). Pack forty pounds; walk, stand, and bend for extended periods.
