EARLIER WORK HISTORY

DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR TRANSPORT, Canberra
I was employed as an apprentice motor mechanic completing nearly three years of an apprenticeship with the Department of Motor Transport in Canberra, working on the bus fleet.

BUREAU OF MINERAL RESOURCES
During the mid 1980's I worked for the Bureau of Mineral Resources in Central Queensland as a plant mechanic, maintaining the drilling rigs, water tankers and troupe carriers. I was also the stand-in shot firer loading explosives for the seismic team.

HAVARI PTY LTD

Over a three year period I worked for Havari Pty Ltd who sub-contracted to Transfield Pty Ltd building transmission lines in NSW and Victoria. I was supervisor responsible for drilling, blowing and excavating the site for installation of the transmission towers. Using gelignite, prilled ammonium nitrate with delayed detonators I would shatter the rock and then using an excavator I would remove the spoil.

WORK EXPERIENCE FROM 1990

1990-2005
Gardener for Booderee Botanic Gardens & then Weed Supervisor/Field Assistant for Booderee National Park.

My duties here included:-
* Collecting soil samples using GPS to record the sample sites in a grid pattern from 6,500 hectare National Park. After scientific mineral analysis was completed I would then enter the records into our database to produce a map of the minerals in the National Park.
* Assist with other resource management tasks in the field using a GPS to map feral flora and fauna in the National Park for recording to database and then to overlaying maps.
* Truck driving, front end loader operator
* Clearing fire breaks with tractor and slasher
* Assisting in the maintenance of equipment and site facilities
* Assisting with fire and rescue emergencies.
* Working safely and considerately as a team member according to the principles of OH & S and EEO.
* Horticultural maintenance and development covering the full range of trade activities.
* Providing some interpretation of the gardens to the visiting public.

Green Corps (Team Leader/Trainer) & Serco Sodexho (Groundsman)

With Green Corps I was the team leader/trainer to ten trainees who were completing Certificate II in Horticulture and I was responsible for their day to day activities that were carried out on Defence Services Lands and in and around the local Shoalhaven Communities. Green Corps were in partnership with Serco Sodexho who I was most recently employed in a permanent/casual position as a groundsman based at Albatross Naval Base. In this positions I carried out a variety of tasks such as maintenance, mowing, tree pruning, digging & planting. I used a variety of equipment in this position from tractors, mowers, chainsaws, brushcutters, spraying equipment and various other hand tools and machinery. In order to get the position I was required to complete a Federal Police security check as I was working from Albatross Naval Base. I was also required to undergo a complete medical check up which placed me in the top 20% in fitness levels in Australia.
