Relevant Experience: June 2007-present: Mining Engineer, Cleveland-Cliffs Michigan Operations; Ishpeming; Long-range mine planning. This entails the identification and scheduling of magnetite and hematite production as well as pit development stripping at the Cleveland-Cliffs Empire & Tilden iron ore mines. Primary responsibilities include developing mine plans which meet annual iron ore production targets while maintaining an ore blend which consistently delivers ore to the concentrator/pellet plant with acceptable metallurgical properties, as well as maintaining existing mine plans to remain within budget constraints; Assisting mine dispatch engineering team by performing the daily auditing of truck loads entered into the mine dispatch system.
August 2001-May 2002; August-December 2002: Graduate Student Teaching Assistant, Civil & Environmental Engineering (Michigan Technological University); Houghton; Instructed undergraduates on fundamental ASTM testing methods for soils, graded lab reports for senior-level undergraduate geotechnical course.
May-August 2001; May-August 2002: Work Study, Civil & Environmental Engineering (Michigan Technological University); Houghton; Analysis of high resolution multispectral imagery of Cleveland-Cliffs Empire Mine tailings impoundment, emphasizing applications of remote sensing towards tailings moisture distribution surveys for the purpose of fugitive dust control; Instrumentation of system monitoring underground mine flooding through the development of a DASYlab 5.5 worksheet for streaming data acquisition from Paroscientific DigiQuartz temperature and pressure sensors, to monitor flooding at the defunct White Pine and Quincy copper mines; Rock strength testing for Michigan Department of Transportation; Concrete core sample preparations for dynamic testing.
January 1998-April 1999: Graduate Student Teaching Assistant, Civil & Environmental Engineering (University of Michigan); Ann Arbor; Instructed undergraduates on fundamental ASTM testing methods for soils, graded homework assignments and lab reports for senior-level undergraduate geotechnical course; Crosshole seismic testing of soils at several sites in Southeast Michigan and Indiana.
September-December, 1997: Miner (open-cast lignite mines), Tagebau Helmstedt & Tagebau Schöningen (Braunschweigishe Kohlen-Bergwerke AG), Helmstedt, Germany; Conveyor belt maintenance, mine de-watering crew, pipe-fitting, water truck driver, bucket wheel excavator crew (rear boom operator).
May-September, 1997: Miner (underground salt mine), Salzbergwerk Stetten (Wacker Chemie GmbH), Haigerloch-Stetten, Germany; Boring machine operator, front end loader operator, water truck driver, loaded shot holes, scaled loose rock after blasting, ventilation conduit installation, conveyer belt maintenance.
June-November, 1996: Work Study, Michigan Mine Safety Training Program, Michigan Technological University, Houghton; Independent research funded by Michigan State Grants program to investigate means of acquisition and utilization of mine-specific time-loss accident data from federal data bases. Results include applications of Bayes Conditional Probability Theorem and GIS in developing mine-specific occupational safety strategies.
