M.Sc. in Earth Sciences from University of Victoria, 2002-2004.
Thesis carved a niche for mineral geologists in the sequestration of CO2 emissions for the purpose of lowering industrial greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to the atmosphere as per the Kyoto Protocol. Previously, only "soft rock" geologists played roles in this critical field through injection of GHGs into depleted oil and gas reservoirs. This thesis proposed storage of CO2 emissions from industrial sources by locking them into mining waste materials rich in MgO (ultramafic rocks) and forming stable carbonates. The idea of mineral sequestration has sparked an international interest in "green mining".
Thesis placed first in Student Poster Competition at Cordilleran Roundup, 2003. It won the Robert L. Bates Scholarship and was awarded a trip to Turkey to present at the 2005 Industrial Minerals Forum in Istanbul. Published in numerous government publications, refereed journals and presented at three conferences.
