3.1 Masters dissertation

The Masters dissertation entitled "An Ontology-Driven Sensor Web application for detecting and classifying Informal Settlements" involved the design and implementation of a prototype Sensor Web application that detects and classifies Informal human Settlements using satellite image data. Two semantic web technologies, i.e. ontologies and software agents were utilised in its development. Reusable software agents in the application perform different image processing functionality and the ontologies served as a common vocabulary which allowed the agents to communicate. The outcome of the research is a system that allows more regular monitoring of Informal Settlements, the ability to quickly and easily configure and reconfigure a Sensor Web application using reusable components, assisting in overcoming interoperability problems between people and between software agents in a distributed environment, incorporating heterogeneous sensor data as well as automating some of the processes through workflows which were previously manually configured.
