PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE & SUCCESSES

ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
-Led a team to purchase a new truck shovel fleet and transfer a decommissioned fleet from TransAlta's Centralia operation. Project included integration plan to develop skills in engineering, maintenance and operations to meet mine development needs and production targets. The two shovel and truck fleets are achieving benchmark productivities.
-Developed and implemented productivity improvement programs at TransAlta's Highvale and Whitewood mines to improve coal quality, recovery and mine productivity. Resulted in a major investment for additional overburden removal equipment being deferred for several years.
-Completed an asset review and modified major rebuilds on exiting assets to reduce the life-cycle cost. Major rebuilds have been deferred 5 years (or eliminated) on draglines.
-Actively participated in a team to tender the Highvale and Whitewood mine contracts. Resulted in a contractor change with the amalgamation of two contractor sites.
-Developed and initiated a Fuel Management system to optimize plant generation based on coal quality and chemistry; units previously not able to meet full load, sustained full load, fuel related production losses were reduced from more than 200 GWHRS to fewer than 50 GWHRS.
-Project Manager for rebuild and boom angle change on the Highvale Mine 8750 Dragline. Modifications and completed project resulted in a 25% productivity improvement.
-Project Manager for rebuild of Highvale Mine 8050 dragline, base replacement with non-OEM base. Resulted in a significant saving to the overall project cost.
-Successfully developed and managed a work scope for the rebuild of TransAlta's BE 1360 dragline. Implemented on time, resulting in a 25% overall productivity improvement.

SR MANAGER - MINE OPERATIONS
* Responsible for the management and strategic planning of the AB Thermal Mine Operations environment to align with the overall Generation strategy.
* Oversee the day-to-day operation of TransAlta's Highvale and Whitewood mines, to meet Alberta Thermal Generating plant fuel requirements.
* Manage working relationships with other TransAlta departments and key stakeholders to ensure integration and collaboration of common business strategies and interests.
* Lead the progressive development of the Highvale and Whitewood Mines with innovative contract strategies, the development of short and long-term mine plans and equipment requirements to optimize operations.
* Manage staff to administer TransAlta's mine contracts, work scopes, costs, target prices and incentive fees for negotiated contractor obligations.
* Negotiate terms of the contract with the mine contractor to ensure TransAlta's best interests are continually satisfied.
* Monitor mine contractor plans, budget, forecasts and costs to ensure compliance with contract intentions, regulatory approvals, license requirements and long-range mine plans.
* Monitor variance reporting of contractor productivities, performance and costs and provide direction where required.
* Oversee mine contractor to implement training activities for engineering, maintenance and operations.
* Network with key stakeholders to develop TransAlta's operating budget, plans and strategies, to ensure capital and operations are optimized. Monitor budget against performance to maximize efficiencies.
* Manage financial objectives including cash flow, capital and operating expenditures for Alberta Mines.
* Maintain open communication with plant business stakeholders to review plant performance and coal inventory requirements.

MINE PLANNING / PROJECT MANAGEMENT
* Oversee the development of short-term mine plans and provide input with the direction of long-term mine planning to ensure optimal considerations are included.
* Manage the development and maintenance of short and long-range equipment plans to determine rebuild timing, maintenance and procurement strategies for dragline and truck/shovel fleets, facilities and other mining equipment for optimal equipment availability and cost effectiveness.
* Oversee and participate in the development of feasibility studies for coal mining properties. Studies include reserve evaluation, mine planning, detail cost estimating, project scheduling, and equipment selection and evaluation.
* Initiate and participate in studies or benchmarking activities to evaluate key mining methods of other operations, for comparison and applicability at the Highvale and Whitewood mines.
* Review geological data to ensure best mining practices are implemented.
* Research and investigate alternative mining methods to ensure productivity is maintained at top efficiency.
* Approve AFE's, business cases and comprehensive project work scopes to meet production objectives.

HEALTH, SAFETY AND THE ENVIRONMENT
* Ensure compliance with all environmental, health and safety requirements.
* Drive safety performance through review of safe work practices of employees and provide immediate coaching and / or initiate corrective action to mitigate potential issues.
* Manage venders to implement improvements to equipment for ease of use, less risk to employee health and more efficient operation. Ensure work is carried out in accordance with environmental guidelines and where issues, take action to restore. Ensure reporting to appropriate regulatory officials is met in a timely manner.

* Create and structure an environment in line with corporate values to align with TransAlta's goals and objectives.
* Manage the training, development and growth of mine operations and planning staff through open communication, team-building exercises, collaborative development plans and through delegation and coaching with increasing responsibilities.
