Solaris and Linux Development and Administration

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Contractor, Legal Aid Ontario, August 2003 to August 2004
* Led a 4 person team of legacy programmer analysts in the extraction and conversion of data from three legacy systems: Oracle on Solaris, Oracle Financials on Solaris, and DB2 on AS/400 to be loaded into an enterprise-wide PeopleSoft Financials (GL, AP, AR, PO) and CRM system.
* Responsibilities included: business requirements gathering and documentation, data cleansing and extraction, report design and implementation, and testing. Developed numerous PL/SQL stored procedures, SQL scripts and Bourne/Perl shell scripts to extract and convert legacy data into a PeopleSoft readable format. Created a secure interface (AppEngine, rsync, Perl, Korn shell and cron) to transfer data from the PeopleSoft system to the Legal Aid Research website.
* Tools and technologies used for this project were: Oracle 7, 8 and 10, Oracle 11i (GL, AP, AR, PO, FA), DB2, Bourne & Korn Shell Script, Perl, Excel, and PeopleSoft 8 running in a Solaris 9, Windows NT/2000 and AS/400 environment.
* Supplementary project 1: Implemented a new web-based issue tracking system by customizing an instance of the MySQL based Bugzilla bug tracking software. Extracted and converted user profile and business specific configuration data from an older system into the new system to allow the users to start documenting issues immediately.

Contractor, Legal Aid Ontario, January 2001 to August 2003
* Designed a custom VisualBasic on Oracle 7 (client/server) Task Management System to replace a Tibco InConcert Workflow system. The new system incorporated reminders and activity logging into the existing province-wide customer management system, and also provided users with a 50-fold increase in response times over the old system which allowed users to enter and process 30% more customer application forms each day.
* Responsibilities included: business requirements gathering, proposing a system design, coding server-side PL/SQL modules, providing technical guidance to the VB programmers, and converting data from the legacy Tibco InConcert workflow system.
* Tools and technologies used for this project were: Oracle 7, PL/SQL, SQL scripts, Visual Basic, Bourne & Korn Shell Script, Perl, Excel, Crystal Reports, and Tibco InConcert running in a Solaris 9 and Windows 2000 environment.
* Supplementary project 1: Implemented MySQL based Bugzilla bug tracking software to manage the needs of a 10 person application development team.
* Supplementary project 2: Implemented a new instance of Bugzilla, and modified Perl and HTML code to facilitate the tracking of issues in support of the management of an enterprise system replacement project.
* Supplementary project 3: Designed and implemented a project to migrate from an old Netscape Web Server and Star Database application to an Apache Web Server and an upgrade of the Star Database application.

Contractor, Legal Aid Ontario, September 1999 to December 2000
* Proposed and coded enhancements, in addition to addressing Y2K issues, on an Oracle PL/SQL and Unix Korn Shell based Data Conversion and Batch Processing System.
* Responsibilities included: business requirements gathering and documentation, data cleansing and extraction, report design and implementation, and testing. Coded enhancements to 50 to 60 PL/SQL stored procedures, SQL scripts and Bourne & Korn shell scripts modules that facilitated the transfer of data between an Oracle based Customer Relationship Management system and a Cobol based financial system. Scoured for, and fixed, all instances of awkward and non-standard date handling code.
* Tools and technologies used for this project were: Oracle 7, DB2, Bourne & Korn Shell Script, Perl, Awk and Sed running in a Solaris 6, Windows 98/NT and AS/400 environment.
* Supplementary Role: Solely managed a province-wide network of 60 Solaris/Oracle servers. Created a set of shell scripts that monitored the health of the servers and provided notification via e-mail whenever problems were detected. Designed and coded a province-wide tape backup management system consisting of 60 independent backup tape devices. Trained a resource to act as my backup and eventual replacement.

Contractor, Online Knowledge, August 1998 to September 1999
* Assisted in the planning and upgrading of all components of a province-wide client/server application to improve all aspects of the user experience (response time, data accuracy and ease of use), in addition to addressing all areas of Y2K exposure.
* Responsibilities included: business requirements gathering and documentation, proposal and implementation of data dictionary table and field changes, coding of PL/SQL, SQL and Bourne and Korn shell scripts, report design and implementation, and testing. * Implemented a Source Code Control System (SCCS) to manage C, PL/SQL and Shell code.
* Provided second level technical support for the province-wide system.

Contractor, Xerox Canada, Systems Analyst, 1994-1995
