Promoted to Plant Manager to operate the day to day operations of a minerals processing plant and mine. Safely managed 250 union mill workers and 75 contract employees in the day to operation of this plant. Provide leadership of production, technical and maintenance teams in processing of colored materials used in the construction industry. Produced 488,000 tons of material annually in an open pit operation under severe to moderate climatic conditions. Reduced energy costs by 22% by reducing natural gas consumption and electrical consumption modifications.
Project Manager

Retained to manage the engineering, procurement, construction and start up of a 12.5 million dollar plant expansion. This expansion included the selection and purchase of new excavators and haul trucks, installation of primary and secondary gyratory crushers and screens along with new rock dryers that replaced in entirety an existing parallel operation. The project included the complete conversion of all controls and instrumentation from 1950 era pneumatic control to the state of the art electronic DCS and PLC operation. Project further modified the colorization and kiln firing of the process minerals. Installed indirect pre dryers that reduced gas consumption by 15% plant wide.

Plant Engineer Manager
Ormet Corporation, Burnside, Louisiana,
Retained to establish technical engineering plant engineering, capital engineering and maintenance department for this Bayer based alumina refinery. While reporting to the vice president of operations, I developed the manpower and staffing necessary to provide engineering and maintenance functions to the 750,000 ton per year metallurgical refinery. The refinery had been idled three years during bankruptcy and required extensive refit of all systems. Installed new boilers and gas turbines to lower the operating costs and to remove the plant from purchased power. Combined under one set of DCS controls the mill DCS and PLC structure to reduce cost and lower personnel requirements. Managed this staff and trades group of 200 personnel in a safe manner while reducing maintenance costs and lowering utility and electrical costs. Developed and installed a new process where gas turbines were used to provide electrical power and the exhaust gas was used for drying thereby reducing cost of drying and calcining by about 6.2 million dollars annually.

Managed the installation completion and commissioning of a new bauxite mine and processing unit in the upper Amazon area of Brazil. This expansion valued at 156 million US dollar provided a 3.4 million tonne per year increase in bauxite capacity providing a total capacity of 12.6 million tones per year. Managed an expat staff and Brazilian team members in the tie in and connection of this processing unit. The plant was completed on time and commissioning occurred with an up time of 94% availability within 21 days of the commissioning start date. After entire project had 100% uptime within 45 days of the start.

An additional project of tailings management and tailing dewatering and silt control involved the installation and operation of a dewatering and silt control system to reduce or eliminate tailing discharge and fines into tributary waters. Project involved the installation of retention ponds with pump stations and primary and secondary settling clarifiers. Four miles of 42 inch HDPE piping was installed with four pump stations with a connected 25,000 HP pumping capacity.

Assigned on a temporary basis to this position to operate the chemical process of this new project which included SX/EW, primary and secondary leaching, of refractory sulphide copper ores. Operated with a Chilean crew the milling and extraction complex of this new project. I developed training and physically trained all new and old operators in the operation of this new expansion. Control logic was changed from filed mounted pneumatic manual controls to electronic control thru PLC control.

Retained to provide the upfront engineering and the start up commissioning of a new copper unit in an existing operation. The existing operation was based upon both oxide and sulphide ore extraction using SX/EW. A new underground mine was being installed as apart of this project. Provided process engineering leadership to a Dutch Engineering firm to develop the process surrounding the process unit. Directed the construability phase and the maintenance and engineering requirements during construction. Commissioned, started up and turned over the operating unit to Codelco. Provided a unique talent for control instrumentation changes from pneumatic to electronic.

* and directed the rebuild and conversion of a paper machine all of which was done with the plant in full operation, consisting of: installation of a new press section, calendar rebuild, installation of a new broke system, installation of machine gauging system, new hood ventilation. Capital Project Manager, assigned from Corporate Engineering, for the installation of a complete coated board machine in an existing facility. Removed existing machine and installed board machine with Temsec press and coating section. While assigned from Corporate Engineering, included turnkey engineering packages for the upgrade and modernization of tissue machines. Additionally, provided engineering and program for upgrade of paper machine dryer system. Provided conceptual engineering process design, develop equipment specs, developed drawings, obtained construction bids, and prepared budget and funding requests. Debottle necked production problems on all tissue machines.

Rebuild Project Manager, in the rebuild of a tissue machine. Developed schedule for all trades, purchased all materials and parts, supervised all construction crews and sub-contractors. Project started ahead of schedule and was within budget. Additionally, provided in shop supervision of the final fabrication and pre-erection of a second tissue machine in vendors Swedish shop.

* Provide the owner daily representation and provide production management of a startup pulp mill and pulp dryer operation in Russia. Provide daily management and oversight to ensure the owner that this co-owned project was operating correctly and effectively.
* Managed the daily operation of a three-machine newsprint and ground wood operation in Northern Finland. Maintained a record 97% machine availability during my tenure.
* Supervised the selection/design/process around a waste fuel and coal utility boiler used in a new pulp mill.
* Selected and recommended the equipment and design necessary for installation to waste fuel and coal utility boiler in an existing mill. Performed miscellaneous engineering for revamp and modernization of Ground wood pulping system. Installed pressurized ground wood prototype system.
