CAREER SUMMARY:
September 2002 to January 2004: Employed by Austal Ships Pty Ltd in the position of Human Resources Manager for the Austal Group of Companies.
July 2000 to September 2002: Employed by Image Marine (a Division of Austal Ships Pty Ltd) in the position of Group Administrator.
January 1975 to July 1999: Employed by Wesfarmers Rural Operations in the position of Human Resource, Operations and Logistics Manager.
CORE COMPETENCIES:
Recruitment and Selection – I was responsible for the total recruitment and selection function for staff from apprentices through to Senior Management positions. This including planning for future needs and retention programs designed to ensure the company maintained qualified staff as well as development of apprentices for the future.
Performance Management Systems – I managed and maintained the performance management system including twice yearly reviews of all staff and monthly reviews of apprentices. This included monitoring and review of remuneration for employee's including maintaining an up to date data base of current remuneration figures aligned to job criteria.
Employee & Industrial Relations – I liaised in an ongoing capacity with Senior Line Managers providing regular advice and information on employee relation matters together with advice on company policies and industrial relations matters. My past roles also included dealing with trade unions, the WAIRC and AIRC.
Induction and Training – I administered and monitored the company induction program and provided training programs on site for new employees. I regularly conducted induction and other training programs geared to orientation of new staff and conducted ongoing reviews of the training programs to ensure up to date, clear and precise information was being administered to new and current employees.
HR Administration – My role encompassed the control and record keeping of sensitive information including monitoring of annual/ sick leave, performance management documentation, company policy documentation and provided information to the payroll department on issues in relation to payment of wages to employees. Additionally I was responsible for the preparation of all new employee documentation including workplace agreements and salary contracts, letters of offer and conducted exit interviews and ensured the correct procedures were followed when employees terminated with the Austal Group.
HR Policy – I continually reviewed and administered the Group policies and procedures and implemented changes or new policies on a regular basis at all work locations. A requirement of the position at all three businesses was the preparation and presentation of financial and business reports as well as development of 5 year business plans directly related to the strategic direction of the company and focused heavily on HR strategies.
OH&S/QA – My roles included the ongoing commitment to safety and quality in the workplace. In my role as HR Manager I represented the company in matters of OH&S, regularly reviewing Workers Compensation claims with our insurers and working closely with rehabilitation consultants and line managers to ensure injured workers are managed correctly and ensuring we were complying with current legislation.
KEY ACHIEVEMENTS:
Planned, developed, coordinated, facilitated and negotiated the introduction of the first EBA in Wool Broking over a fifteen month period that resulted in a successful outcome and adoption throughout the industry Australia wide.
I implemented an in house training and safety committee into the wool operation at Wesfarmers to improve staff knowledge and performance and to reduce risk of injury through workplace practices.
While at Wesfarmers I was directly responsible for the writing and implementation of the ISO 9002 quality system.
Implemented a succession planning program into the Austal Ships business units by working with Line Managers to develop systems to identify potential future leaders and ensure the ongoing success of the business. Currently all business units have a structure of succession from Line Management down to Supervisory level.
I worked directly with TAFE to develop training modules structured to meet the requirements of the business units. This is highlighted by the ongoing success of the Austal Ships apprentice program especially in the area of aluminium fabrication where they are viewed as a leader in this field.
I implemented a system for line managers to follow that would reduce areas of concern in relation to IR issues. Since taking on the HR Managers role there have been no successful IR claims against the company. I also represented the company in matters of an OH&S matter and workers compensation matters.
Collaborated with Senior Management (Austal Group) to develop and facilitate the introduction of an AWA into the workforce to replace old WPA's. This was highly successful with 99.5% of all manufacturing staff now on AWA's.

As HR Manager I lead a team of five people providing HR, ER, IR, EEO and OH&S services for 1,500 employees spread over three facilities within the Henderson area. My responsibilities in this role were,
* Leadership – developing strategic HR plans and implementing these into the group, motivating and leading by example the HR team in its goals and objectives.
* Management – of my direct staff, resources, training and development programs and budget costs of $1 million.
* Customer Service – recruitment, induction, providing advice to line management on matters of HR, IR and EEO, administration including company policies, performance appraisals, training, succession planning and advice to payroll. Formed strong relationships with consultant groups, suppliers and company lawyers.
* ER/IR – providing sound and accurate ER advice to senior management in relation to IR and company policy matters.
* OH&S – representing the group in OH&S matters to ensure the group interests are protected by attending reviews of claims with insurers and constant liaison with line managers.
* Quality – regularly review systems and look at introducing new methods and systems to reduce cost and time without sacrificing quality and/or performance.

Group Administrator
As Group Administrator for Image Marine I led a team of four people providing HR/ER, Financial and Administrative services for 120 employees. My responsibilities in this role were,
* Leadership – motivating and inspiring staff to achieve goals and targets.
* Management – of my direct staff, budgets (sales of $30 million, overhead costs of $4 million and production costs of $20 million) working with senior Austal management to create business plans.
* Customer Service – recruitment, providing administration services to line management, payroll inputs and provision of statistical data to the General Manager and Group Financial Controller.
* Quality - regularly review systems and look at introducing new methods and systems to reduce cost and time without sacrificing quality and/or performance.
