c) Portia Management Services Limited, UK. (The owners and managers of the
Port of Liverpool, UK along with another 5 such ports elsewhere in the
world).

The following Port Projects are currently under consideration for implementation -
(1) At Krishnapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India. (Building of a new dry cargo port)
(2) At Dahej, Gujarat State, India. (Expansion of the existing port)
(3) At Sikka, Gulf of Kutch, Gujarat State, India. (Converting the lighterage port to a full
fledged along side port).

As advisor to IBPDC, my duties include :-
• Port Feasibility and bankability Study in relation to its location,
cargo potential,
hinterland, marine conditions, other related requirements, safety and
environment issues.
• Study and Report Preparation of cargo handling systems, reviewing trade
requirements, safety, efficiency, vessel turn around time, cargo
types, ports’ future expansion needs, etc..
• Overseeing the Import clearances of all plant, equipment & cargo handling systems.
• Communication systems, Documentation systems, Commercial systems, etc..
• Studying competitive ports’ tariffs and suggesting schedule of Port Tariff.
• Interacting with several Government Bodies and Authorities like DGS, Dubai Port Authorities (I know all the top brass of DPA).
Sinclair Shipping is a company engaged in ship chartering & Freight Forwarding of all types and sizes of tonnages, like - Handy dry bulkers, handymaxs, product carriers, capes, vlccs, etc.. The company also hires vessels for coastal movements.
As MD of Sinclair, my duties include :-

innovative and practical Business re-engineering solutions for

Varun Forwarders, a licensed Customs House Agency (CHA) had a major tie-up with one of Europe’s largest freight forwarders - M/s. Sea Air and Land Forwarding Limited, UK, with another 50 associated forwarders all over the world. The company handled all kinds of inbound and outbound cargo by dry containers, liquid - bulk containers, chartered vessels, ODC/ heavy lifts and project cargo.
As CEO of Varun Forwarders, my duties included :-

1998 to 2000 ;
Asst. Vice President, Head of Shipping, Port Logistics, & Strategic Planning,
Reliance Industries Limited & Reliance Petroleum Limited, Mumbai-India.
Responsibilities ;
Joined the company to handle the imports of the new us$ 4.25 billion, crude oil & products Refinery and port constructed at Jamnagar. Both the Refinery and the port are the largest of its kind in the world. The port at Jamnagar handles about 60 million tons of liquid and dry cargo every year.
All matters concerning Import & Export, port management, vessel purchase, chartering, container cargo, coastal movement, interaction with port authorities, Customs, Freight Auditing, FF Auditing, documentation systems, port management systems, contract finalisation, commercial and legal issues, preparing Budgets and MIS reports, preparing & implementing logistics master plans and business re-engineering.
Besides the above, I was designated to look into areas concerning streamlining of both in-bound and out bound movements of cargo by containers, air-freight, Heavy-lifts and ODC parcels. Formulation of agreements with CHA’s, vendors and sub-contractors and getting vessels on BBDC and finalising commercial and technical contracts for the same. Monitoring of salvage operations and interacting with insurance surveyors and overseas solicitors for restoration activity, redressal of claims, checking letters of credit, etc..
Over the last 6 months I formulated the final logistics strategy for handling and moving about 2500 - 3000 export containers per month from both the petro-chemical plants at Hazira and Jamnagar. This involved hiring feeder vessels, barges, port terminalling operations, export documentation, liaison with Customs and port authorities, negotiations with shipping lines.
1997 to 1998 ;
Full Time Advisor - International trade, Shipping and Logistics, to Mr. B.N.
Puranmalkaji, Managing Director of Indo-Gulf Fertilisers & Chemical Corporation
Ltd., and Birla Copper, both A. V. Birla Group companies.
Responsibilities ;
With the Aditya Birla Group, initially, I helped them unfold their captive dry ports’ development at Dahej, near their copper smelter project, which has been set-up at a cost of Usd 450 million. Thereafter, I advised them and interacted on their behalf for a joint venture project with the representatives of - Transroute International - France, Emirates Trading - Dubai, , The British Govt’s. Consortium, HBG-Group - Netherlands, Portia - Liverpool, Petronet LNG - France, Sofregaz - France, IOTL-Hamburg, BPCL, IPCL, IOC, MRPL, etc..
I am also advised them on sourcing of raw materials and formulation of short-term and long-term policies for importing and exporting various products. Matters pertaining to vessel handling, vessel chartering, lightering of cargo, containerised and air cargo shipments and inland transportation and warehousing was within my advisory purview and scope. I helped them in sourcing vessels for hauling their liquid-bulk products and movement of residual products evacuation from the plant. I was also doing interaction with both the Customs and port authorities. I formulated and finalised the ports’ off-shore O&M contract for the off-shore support fleet.
I helped enhance the cargo handling capacity of the port from 1.5 million mt using a single jetty to 2.5 million mt per annum, without compromising on safety and environmental issues.
With the above Group I was interacting with the entire top management of not only the personnel of the above companies, but, also with several other large industrial Houses, both overseas and in India.
1996 to 1997 ;
Vice president, Business development, commercial affairs (International
trade) & Logistics with the Phoenix Group of companies which included -
Phoenix Overseas Limited, Phoenix International Limited, Phoenix Rus Limited, besides other group companies.
The group’s trading turnover jumped from about us$ 3 million in 1995-96 to about us$ 11.70 million in 1996-97, during my tenure. Phoenix exported commodities like Rice, sugar, soya-meal, rice-bran meal, seeds, textiles, garments, shoes and Pharma-products after I joined them. Phoenix imported project cargo, cement manufacturing machinery, shoe components, etc., in large quantities/volumes. Export cargoes were destined mostly for Russia, CIS, Europe and the Middle East. They had branch offices at London, Milan, Moscow, Odessa, Alma-Ata, Bucharest, Singapore, Kiev and Tashkent. Owning and operating 2 restaurants in Moscow. A private minor port facility was to be set-up in
Gujarat after commissioning of the cement plant.
Responsibilities ;
Based at Mumbai, I was the profit centre head with about 42 persons reporting to me. The Mumbai office handled 80% of the group’s imports and about 90% of their exports in terms of value. The Mumbai office also handled the marketing, sales, advertising and distribution of shoe sales of both the Reebok and Phoenix brands.
I personally handled 100% of the vessel chartering requirements, bulk, break-bulk, containerised and air shipments, including exports/imports made through all Gujarat ports, Madras, Kakinada, etc..The appointment of C&F agents, negotiating terms, making out of contracts and other legal documents, security systems, protection agents, surveyors, ship chartering, freight bookings, business development in agri-trade, sourcing of commodities and equipment both from Indian and overseas suppliers. Other responsibilities included - accountability for the costing of each transaction, working out the costing, administration, recruitment, liasing with various Government authorities,
cargo clearances through port and customs, legal and financial affairs.
NOTE: Just before joining the Phoenix group I had set-up a minor port project at Jakhau, Kutchh Dist., Gujarat, for the Saigal Group, loading about 15,000 mt of bulk-Wheat as the 1st export shipment from Jakhau Port for the first time in the ports’ history.
May 1994 to June 1996 ;
Joint General Manager, Group Central Logistics, Essar Group of Companies,
Mumbai, which include - Essar Shipping Limited., Essar Steel Limited, Essar World Trade Limited, Essar Projects Limited, etc.. I started the core logistics division in 1996. This division planned, handled and monitored all the trading activities of the group with an annual movement of about 5 million tons of in-bound and out-bound dry cargo.
Responsibilities ;
All aspects of agri-products and garments marketing in the international market, dry-bulk, liquid-bulk and break-bulk shipping, air-freight, road transport, planning logistics, warehousing, distribution of material to and from over 60 warehouses located all over the world.
Handling all aspects such as making offers, negotiations, documentation, banking with special emphasis on port operations, appointment of CNF agents, stevedores, husbanding agents, liasing with ship owners, charter brokers, owner’s agents and IATA agents.
Setting up of a fully computerised system between the head office and the branch offices for information flow, planing, execution, tracking, documentation, security system, reporting system, inventory control system, advance planning system and distribution and budgetary controls system.
Controlling and handling day-to-day vessel chartering, freight bookings and negotiations for charter vessels and containers. Holding Indian Customs category - 1 pass for dealing with the Customs authorities.
Beside the above, looking after day-to-day commercial and legal affairs, drafting and checking commercial contracts, advising the promoter directors about pit-falls and impeding problems. Up-gradation of the system for future economies in the supply chain. Planning training programs for in-house personnel for orientation and awareness in logistics.
1986 to 1994 ;
Director, Wings N’ Sails Agency (India) Pvt Ltd.,(WNS) a company engaged in
international trade, freight forwarding, and info-tech development in shipping and international trade.
WNS had developed India’s first database on shipping, logistics and international trade on CD-ROMs and floppy diskettes for the international market. They also traded in software and fertilisers as indenting agents.
Responsibilities;
All aspects of marketing, sales, operations, documentation, Customs and port formalities. Handling consignments of break-bulk, bulk, project cargo, airfreight and sea + air. Handled day-to-day general administration, finance and new business development started the import division in 1988 and the heavy lifts division in 1991.Launched the first floppy disks database called "Mariner" in the Indian market in 1993.
Note: Joined the company as line Manager and was eventually promoted to director and CEO.
1984 to 1986 ;
All-India Marketing Manager, Sea Land Svc. Inc., NJ, (an American container
shipping line) one of the largest and the world’s oldest container shipping line. Sea Land had offices at Mumbai, Kandla, New Delhi, Calcutta, Madras, Cochin and Tuticorin.
Responsibilities ;
I was in-charge of marketing and selling space from the ports of Mumbai (about 1000 Teus/month), New Delhi (about 200 Teus/month), Kandla (about 500 Teus/month) and Calcutta (about 300 Teus/month). This constituted about 80% of the total out-bound traffic from India for Sea Land ; and, about a 20% chunk of the total out-bound freight available from the Indian sub-continent.
In the first 18 months of joining the company I was given 3 promotions and 5 increments. I was also selected to preside over seminars and conferences for visiting delegates and personnel to orient them with the Indian market and business community. My trail-blazing record in this company is unbroken till date and am yet (in 2001) considered to be a vessel space marketing wizard by senior members of the shipping industry. Even today, whenever any old colleague or friend from the industry would like their market share to improve, they call upon me for help and guidance. A team of 7 marketing personnel in Mumbai, 2 marketing persons in Kandla and 3 each at New Delhi and Calcutta were reporting to me.
Besides marketing, I was in-charge of new commodity development, training personnel, reports summarisation for the senior management analysis, liasing with the 78 other Sea Land offices world wide for smooth delivery of cargo and other matters concerning pricing and loads, gathering information on competition, etc..
1979 to 1984 ;
Marketing and Liaison Manager, Gem Refineries Limited, Calcutta and Bombay.
The company was the first refinery in India to extract edible oil from rice bran in collaboration with Extraction DeSmet of Belgium.
Responsibilities ;
For the first 2 years, I was involved with the preparation of the project and market feasibility reports and liased extensively the mother financial institution (ICICI) for the approval and sanction and disbursal of the INR 150 million loan.
Over the next 3 - 4 years, I helped the (with vendor development, market study and marketing policies and pricing structure and control. I helped in the advertising strategy, means and costs study (the project was being set-up at this time) and helped the senior personnel with the handling of project cargo movements from Europe to India.

Reading, Writing articles on Business Re-engineering & Port Development ideas / systems & logistics as a subject.
