Director and Partner, with additional directorships in various group companies. Responsibilities encompassed company management, strategic planning, business development, marketing, tenders and project execution. In 1990, was one of the three directors mandated to establish and manage "BKS Industrial", the new industrial projects division of the company.

SIGNIFICANT PROJECT EXPERIENCE

* Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC): Mina Al-Ahmadi Refinery, Kuwait: Explosion Damage Reconstruction Project. Fluor Engineering Manager / Project Director: 2001/2002

The project comprised the demolition of the damaged units, followed by the construction of the new replacement units, with a project value of $ 340 million.

Participated in the finalisation of the EPC contract negotiations with KNPC, the insurance loss adjusters (Robertson) and the Fluor consortium partner (Sunkyong Engineering and Construction (SKEC), South Korea.
With Fluor as the lead member of the consortium, thereafter assumed the role of the Fluor Engineering Manager and Coordinator for the execution of the project. Established and led a resident team of Fluor engineers to oversee the work by SKEC in South Korea. This role required extensive travel, with the work being carried out in The Netherlands, South Korea, Kuwait and the UK, and the necessity of close interaction with the client, consortium partner and vendors worldwide.

* Engen Petroleum Refinery Partnership, Durban, South Africa. Engen Refinery Chief Project Engineer and Fluor Project Director: 1998/2000

Assigned to Engen to initiate and develop the partnership, which thereafter assumed responsibility for the execution of all engineering and capital projects at the refinery. Appointed by Engen as the Refinery Chief Project Engineer. The development of the partnership required the restructuring of the existing Refinery Projects Department into an integrated partnering organisation with Fluor personnel, practices and procedures.
The partnership key objectives were to eliminate the backlog of project work, and at the same time significantly reduce their costs. Both objectives were achieved, with costs being reduced by 27% in the first year. The successful development of the partnership resulted in Fluor obtaining significant further work on a sole-source basis. Partnership staff totalled 170 personnel, with the value of projects exceeding $30 million p.a.

* Hulett Aluminium Expansion, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. Fluor Project Director / JV Engineering Manager: 1996/1998

A joint venture between Fluor and Hatch Associates (Canada), providing engineering and management services to Hulett Aluminium for an expansion project.

The management teams were based on site in Pietermaritzburg, with the engineering work performed in Johannesburg and Durban. Responsibilities were the management and co-ordination of the JV engineering work in all locations, and Fluor management, profitability and financial reporting. The project was a resounding success, from both the Hulett and Fluor perspectives. Project value was $ 480 million, and the final JV contribution a total of 500 000 manhours.

* Gypsum Industries: Phospho-Gypsum Beneficiation and Board Plant, South Africa. Project Director, BKS Inc: 1987/1988

Management of the multi-disciplinary team from feasibility studies through to final commissioning. Project value $ 30 million.

* Mossgas FA Offshore Gas Platform: Mossel Bay, South Africa. Director, BKS Inc / Deputy Project Manager, Offshore Design Services: 1987/89

Offshore Design Services (ODS) was a joint venture of the engineering and consulting firms Brown & Root (UK), Bateman, BKS Inc, Liebenberg & Stander and CA Du Toit & Partners. Management of the detailed design for the Mossel Bay Offshore Gas Platform and Subsea Pipelines. Project value $ 1 billion, and the JV input a total of 1.3 million manhours.

* BOT Toll Road Developments, Gauteng, South Africa. General Manager: Tollconsult Consortium / Project Manager, BKS Inc: 1986/1987

Tollconsult is a consortium of consulting firms BKS Inc, Stewart Scott and Africon, established to provide consulting and management services for the development of privatised toll roads in SA. Appointed to participate in the negotiations between the government, the operating company Tollway and the construction contractors Highway Construction Venture (A consortium of contracting firms LTA, Concor, Basil Read and Grinaker). Participation in committees and negotiations involving the large number of stakeholders, political factions and other interested organisations, and negotiation of the construction contracts. Project value $ 300 million.
