Posted in the project execution wing & the jobs involved in were, right from the Design State to final testing & commissioning of different projects. The jobs includes:
I. Short listing of highly reliable vendors for indigenous & imported equipment and also erection contractor.
II. Close monitoring of all the aspects of the projects comprising manufacturing of equipment by vendors / sub-vendors, inspection, transportation, receipt and proper storage at site.
III. Designers supervision and construction supervision at each stage of construction.
IV. Participation in pre-commissioning tests and final commissioning.
V. Employing the most advanced methods in an integrated project management system like PERT & COMPUTERS. (Prima Versa, MS Projects etc.)

Erection and testing of equipment by close co-ordination with foreign experts. The modification of snubber roll and pickling tank was under taken during threading of coil strip. Erection and commissioning of polypropylene pipelines. Anti-corrosive pumps and hydraulic equipment.
Modification of Carlite line by employing three-roll system for better tension control of strip.
13.12 Name of the Project: 2 X 60 MW CAPTIVE POWER
PLANT
Cost of the Project: Rs. 180 Crore

Independent charge of Demineralization Plant. Testing, commissioning and conductance of guarantee test of the plant within stipulated time. Pivotal role in the erection and commissioning of fire fighting system, Ash handling Plant, compressor Station, Electro-static precipitator, Fuel oil handling plant, lying of service pipe lines like air, water and nitrogen.
Involved during the light up of Boiler and synchronization of the units. Subsequently stabilization of power generation to the rated capacity.
13.13 Name of the Project: IGNITION FURNACES IN
SINTERING PLANT.

Functional role in the completion of the erection and commissioning of Ignition Furnaces during plant shutdown within a record time.
MODERNIZATION PACKAGES:
The massive modernization program of Rourkela Steel Plant is to give a fillip to the much-needed technological upgradation to various equipment's as well as to enhance the production capacity of the plant and also improve upon the quality parameters.
I was involved with the following modernization packages. These packages give special emphasis to Environment Pollution Control and each package has a quality assurance plan.
13.14 Name of Project: MODIFICATION OF LIME
DOLOMITE BRICK PLANT
Main Party: M/S MECON
Total Cost: Rs. 29 Crores
Collaborator: M/S LAIES (Germany)
Consultants: M/S M.N. Dastur & Co.
This project is implemented in three stages. The job include dismantling of existing equipment and replacing them with proportioning equipment, mixer, presses (1600 T) and incorporation of facilities for Grain Heating, Magnesia enrichment, Pitch bonding, de-dusting system and Tempering kiln.
Involved in the successful completion of Design, Engineering, Supply, and Erection. Testing, Trial runs Integrated Commissioning and process stabilization of Stage - I, Stage - II and Stage - III without time and cost over-runs.
The activities include:
Structural fabrication & Erection: 740 Tons.
Equipment Supply & Erection: 700 Tons.
13.15 Name of Project: NEW CALCINING PLANT
Main Party: M/S Engineering Projects (I) Ltd.
Total Cost: Rs. 50 Crore
Collaborator: M/S MAIERZ (SWITZERLAND)
Structural Fabrication: 5700 Tons
& Erection.
Equipment supply &: 2600 Tons
Erection.
The job involves intensive co-ordination with the supplier, consultants, erection for smooth progress of job without any delay. The project entails intense follow-up from the engineering state itself due to the huge quantum of job, the unit on which the entire steel plant's production and performance is affected.
13.16 Name of the Project: NEW DOLOMITE ROTARY KILN
Total Cost: Rs.22 Crores
Collaborator: M/S Fuller, USA
Structural Fabrication: 580 Tons
& Erection
Equipment supply: 1120 Tons
& Erection
This job is a typical job as the kiln is of rotary type of 2.8M diameters and 78M long. The erection of this kiln is a specialized job. The job is also very critical in nature, as the work requires monitoring at each stage of erection with sophisticated tools.
13.17 Name of the Project: NEW GAS CLEANING PLANT
FOR LD CONVERTORS IN
STEEL MELTING SHOP.
Main Party: M/S OTTO INDIA LIMITED
Total Cost: Rs.50 Crores.
Collaborator: M/S MDH, GERMANY

This project attracts special attention, as it is a pollution control scheme. The job is typical in nature, as this pollution control measure is done on the existing converters in Steel Melting Shop without affecting the production of the plant.
13.18 Name of the Project: WASTEWATER TREATMENT
PLANT
Main Party: M/S KSGL
Total Cost: Rs. 5 Crores
Collaborator: M/S AAF, USA
Consultant: M/S M.N. Dastur & Co.
The scope of the work includes storage, civil, Structural construction, Equipment erection, testing & commissioning for wastewater treatment Plant. The process involve in the treatment of wastewater and recycling of this treated water back in to the cycle @ 250 M³ / Hour for each unit.
13.2 MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS OF PLANT & EQUIPMENTS
A. Presently working as Head of the Department of Mechanical and In-Charge of all repairs and maintenance activities of Plant and Equipment including Capital Repairs.
The job include planning and scheduling of all maintenance activities to keep the equipment at the best of its health so as to minimize downtime and loss of production.
a) Planning and procurement of spares, consumables and equipment for all the running units in time using CIIMS concept & Computers within the budget.
b) Use of CMMS and CBMS concepts in maintenance.
c) Development and simplification of systems by employing SOP's and SMP's.
d) Encouragement of innovative ideas through Srujani and Group Performance Awards and SIG's.
e) Reduction of maintenance costs by employing value engineering and import substitution methods.
f) Building up the team by development of subordinates and employees by technical upgradation of knowledge and skill and training.
B. THE MAJOR EQUIPMENTS HANDLED IN THE PLANT ARE OF VARIOUS TYPES WHICH INCLUDE:
a) Rotating equipment: Compressors, Blower, Pumps, Generators (Diesel), Vibromills etc.
b) Conveying Equipment: Belt Conveyors, Screw conveyors and Bucket elevators.
c) Hydraulic Equipment: Press, Pneumatic equipment.
d) Dedusting Systems: Bag filters, ESP and Cyclones.
e) Furnaces: Tempering Fce., Stress Annealing Fce., Stress Relieving Fce. Etc.
f) Hardening: Oil Quenching, Water Quenching, Quette Unit.
g) Machines: Drilling M/cs, Profile Cutting CNC M/cs, Grinding M/cs, Shot Blasting M/c, Tool Room etc.
h) Service & Utility Systems: Air line, Water line, Oil line, Gas Line, Oxygen Line Nitrogen Line, Lube System etc.
i) Air conditioning and ventilation systems.
13.3 PRODUCT DEVLOPMENT:
Special assignment to explore and develop special steels for different applications. The following grades of steels are developed in our shop:
- Development of Nuclear Steel for IGCAR
- Development of Target Steel for Defemce.
- Development of steel for Navy and Shipbuilding industry.
- Development of steel for mining machines.
- Development of steel for HydroPower Projects.
Necessary infrastructure and project requirements for these steels are being augmented in our existing shop including new machines etc and likely to be implemented in near future.
