Universal Compression(and predecessors-Weatherford Global, Gemini, and Energy Industries)—1/1994 to 12/2001. Universal Compression is a result of a string of consolidations. US revenue is $575M. Served as Director of Materials. Staff of 47. Dotted line responsibility for 55 additional employees at 13 regional locations.
Integration—Presided over 4 major mergers and 4 minor acquisitions. Integration included software conversions, ERP training, part master reconciliation, and supplier rationalization. Closed 5 fabrication facilities and 3 distribution centers. Maintained database for cost/sell throughout. All merger activities were seamless to customers and users.
Purchasing—Controlled purchases of $225M annual. Annual cost reductions averaged 2%. Major negotiations included engines, coolers, compressors, oil, subcontract machining, subcontract fabrication, repaired products, and freight. Cost of finished product was nearly identical after 8 years. Served as compression representative for Weatherford Global source initiatives. Many VMI applications were put in place.
Inventory Control—Using DRP technology, re-supplied inventories to over 700 locations in the US. Managed a database of over 100,000 part masters, including source, cost, and sell pricing. Supported fabrication of $225M in engineer-to-order environment. Inventory turns exceeded 15. Provided call-in center support for emergency parts needs(7/24/365). Provided significant material support for international affiliates. Assumed responsibility for international parts sales this year, increasing it from $1.2M to $2.8M(annualized).
Warehousing—Consolidated inventories from 7 different distribution points into one center . As a result of the consolidations, turns were only 2.5. During consolidation, accuracy dropped from 96% to 91%(absolute). Implemented bar code identification early in process. Operation was 7/24/365.
Support—Devised and implemented standardized structure of BOM and ECN process to reduce engineering time. Twice served for software selection process. Documented materials processes for ISO9001 implementation. Assisted with service sales presentations to key customers.
Training—Taught APICS courses to over 130 employees. Additionally taught Total Quality Control one semester at local community college. Actively participated in software user group activities as well as 6 APICS International events.
Vanessa-Valvtron, Div of Keystone Intl. Extreme service valve manufacturer. Revenue $7M manufacturing and 20M of distributor sales.
Served as Materials and Quality Manager(9/91 to 1/94). Staff of 7 was reduced to 3 employees. Combined team effort reduced cost of products by over 30%
Purchasing/Inventory Management—Imported $12-15M of Vanessa valves for re-sale in the US. Reduced inventory by 45% to attain 5 turns at departure. Implemented full Symix software ERP system.
Quality Assurance—Initially responsible for Quality. A separate QA Manager was hired for the ISO9001 process. Wrote and implemented all materials related procedures for the ISO audit.
Manchester Tank and Equipment. Served as Director of Materials(1/90 to 4/91),Director of Purchasing(1/89-1/90), and Administration Manager(4/86-1/89). High volume, repetitive manufacturer of ASME and DOT pressure vessels. Responsible for 9 plant operation with revenues of $91M. . Seventeen materials employees at 9 locations reported indirectly.
Integration—Two acquisitions(3 plants) were integrated simultaneously, nearly doubling the size of the company. Both required ERP software training, database integration, and source rationalization.
Purchasing—Responsible for all purchase sources of company, including 55,000 tons of steel and over 3 million valves. In two years, purchased cost reductions totaled $3.4M net(primarily steel).
Inventory—Reduced inventory company-wide by $4.6M(44%). Raw materials levels had 16.6 turns. The last plant built was designed for JIT operation, turning 37 times.
The Administration Manager position at the DOT plant in Elkhart, In, was essentially the number two position in a 300+ employee operation. Customer Service, Purchasing, Quality Control, Scheduling, Shipping and Receiving all reported to Administration(29 employees).
Customer Service—Directly responsible for top two accounts. Sales to both increased significantly during tenure, with Thermos increasing purchases from $4.5M to $10M.
Inventory Management—Responsible for implementation of new ERP software system. By implementing rough cut capacity scheduling, management was convinced to increase sales commitments to Thermos, doubling production while cutting overtime to a fraction.
Warehousing and Quality—Storeroom reorganization allowed the increased shipments with decreased manpower. Personally implemented UPC bar code system to facilitate retail sales and internal identification. Inventory accuracy of finished goods improved from 73% to 94%.
Frick Company—Refrigeration Equipment(custom ETO fabrication)—General Manager-Blu-Cold Products.(10-84-4/86) Developed and implemented a business plan to revitalize a pressure vessel product line. Responsible for all phases of business, except accounting. Staff increased from 12 salaried and hourly(UAW) employees to 34.
Sales-Marketing—As part-time salesman, increased sales from $800K to $2.25M over an 18 month period.. Added an average of one new customer per month. Margins on sales moved from loss to 17% pre-tax. Standard costs dropped 14%.
Inventory—Inventory turns improved from 1.2 to 3.7.
Other areas—Doubled equipment assets through a barter agreement. Personally did ASME design, purchasing, quoting, and scheduling.
As Production and Inventory Manager(9/81-10/84) Reduced manpower from 64 to 39 by 1984 with stable business level
Inventory Control—Improved turns from 1.7 to 2.8 in 2 years. Implemented new screw compressors to production.
Warehousing and Traffic—Warehousing productivity increased 26% while accuracy improved from 87% to 93%(zero tolerance).
Support services—Developed and Implemented first ECN system for Frick.
Clarke Division of Clarke-Gravely(9/78-9/81). Manufacturer of floor cleaning equipment(high volume, repetitive). As Production and Inventory Manager, reduced inventories by 24%. More importantly, reduced non-shippable sales backlog from $2.2 million to $60K in 18 month period. During this time, introduced three new product lines. Staff of 9. As Product Manager—QA, supervised staff of 13 salaried and UAW inspectors. Monitored field failure rates, warranty claims, and quality costs in general.
