August 1997 – July 2001
University of Pune, India
First Class with Honors

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:
I) Structural Analyst (intern) February 2005 – May 2005
Belcan Engineering Group, Cary NC

* Projects undertaken:
1) Finite element analysis of Axle casting Analysis using SDRC IDEAS. (Caterpillar Inc.)
* Performed 3-d and 2-d axis- symmetric finite element analysis for design support and analysis documentation.
* Created parabolic tetrahedral elements with higher element density at the bearing support.
* Represented the shaft as beam and connected to the axle casting using rigid spiders and gap elements to simulate roller bearings.
* Determined the stresses at the bearing supports, which result from the applied and induced loads, also provided a comparison of these stresses with the corresponding material allowable using appropriate theories of failure.
Tools: SDRC I-DEAS (v.11 m2)

2) Adaptor plate analysis (Small Wheel Loader), (Caterpillar Inc.)
* Imported and de-featured the model for meshing.
* Created a mesh using parabolic tetrahedral for the housing and extruded linear quadrilateral elements to form brick elements for the plate.
* Used spring elements and rigid spiders to support the engine and 3 pumps.
* Lumped masses were used to represent engine and pump at the respective CGs.
* Applied the loads and performed modal analysis and G-loads analysis to obtain the frequencies and stresses.
Tools: SDRC I-DEAS (v.11 m2)

3) Stick Analysis (Small Wheel Loader), (Caterpillar Inc.)
* Used quadrilateral, triangular and brick elements to create the FE model.
* Embedded 1 row of shell elements to simulate the weld.
* Modeled the doubler plate as shells and connected it through perimeter weld by extruding element edges and merging nodes.
* Applied the boundary conditions and observed the Von Mises Stresses.
Tools: FEMB, Nastran

4) Backhoe Loader Hood Analysis (Caterpillar Inc.)
* Created the finite element model using triangular and quadrilateral elements.
* Represented the welds by merging the nodes, and rigid spiders (RBE2) were used to simulate bolts.
* Performed non-linear static analysis to determine the load that will cause yielding of structures.
Tools: FEMB, Nastran.

II) Mechanical Engineer
08/2001 - 07/ 2002
Span Filtermist, Pune, India
Performed project titled 'Combination Filter Using Cyclone Dust Collector and Centrifugal Mist Separator'
* Designed and manufactured a Dust separator which would prevent machine dust from entering the mist separator which was designed to convert coolant mist back to liquid form.
* Conducted research in the field of cyclone and built an experimental cyclone dust separator
* Obtained data and formulated equations required to build the cyclone at smaller size as compared to those built in industry
* Modeled the separator in I-deas and analyzed for stresses using Ansys
* Achieved a final outcome where 80% of the chips were separated from entering the mist separator

Research Project:
September 2002 - February 2005
University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio

1) 'Tradeoff analysis in minimum volume design of multi-stage helical gear reduction units'
* The principal aim is to present a generalized optimal design formulation with multiple objectives which is applicable to gear train of arbitrary complexity.
* Formulated the constraint equations and objective functions necessary for the optimization algorithm.
* Implemented Monte Carlo method for generation of random numbers required for starting vector.
* Generated Pareto Curves for 2-stage, 3-stage gear trains.
* Analyzed the tradeoff between surface fatigue life and volume of a three stage gear train using weighted sum method.
* Implemented Lp Norm Method to obtain best possible design from a large pool of available solutions.
Tool: MatLab

2) Modeling of Butterfly Valve
* Modeled the assembly using Pro-Engineer (v 2000 i2).
Tools: Pro-Engineer

3) Design and analysis of periodic shaft for gear mesh vibration control
* Performed literature survey in this field.
* Developed a MatLab code for the uniform shaft and periodic shaft using finite element techniques and observed 20% attenuation in the vibration response at the bearing supports due to periodicity.
* Modeled and analyzed a periodic shaft using ANSYS to validate the results.
Tools: ANSYS, MatLab

4) Modal analysis of rotor.
* Calibrated the hammer, selected and located the sensors to complete the set-up for the test.
* Collected response data for impact testing of unbalanced rotor using UC- X-Modal software
* Measured SIMO responses using HP- FFT VXI Analyzer
* Tracked order using MAP Demo (UC –SDRL) software
* Generated the report and presented the results in front of 60 people.
Tools: Xmodal, Mapdemo, MRIT.
