PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
February 2000 - Present:
- Current function is a shift lab technician, acting as shift foreman at infrequent times, in Coastal Aruba
Refining Company, N.V.; a subsidiary of El Paso Energy Corporation, (ex-Lago Oil Refinery & Transport Co. Ltd., subsidiary of Exxon until 1985) in Aruba, Dutch Caribbean Island, with a full time and permanent contract.
- Experience in characterisation of petroleum products, according to ASTM, IP and UOP norms, conducting routine and non-routine analyses on raw materials, intermediate products in process and finished oil products, (gas, naphtha, jet fuel, diesel, vacuum gas oil, fuel oil, asphalt, sulphur, coke).
- Carrying out routine analyses on oil products, ensure that all tests are run, report to the plants or oil movement any off-specs results. Keep all tanks' sheet, loading sheets and final vessel sheets updated.
- Supervise, plan, and coordinate work of personnel on duty in an environmental team.
- Characterisations of sour waters from the refinery are another routine analyses conducted.
- Performing analyses at infrequent intervals on strange substances that emerge during the processes.
January 96 - June 99:
- Period as a chemist, in RAIZ (Forest and Paper Research Institute), Aveiro, Portugal.
- Experience in the structural, physical-mechanical, chemical and optical characterisation of pulp and paper according to ISO, TAPPI, SCAN norms.
- Characterisation of sour waters and sludge from the pulp & paper mill and soils samples were carried out, to check whether they met the governmental (European Union) policies for environment.
- Characterisation and evaluation of strange substances formed during the pulping & bleaching processes throughout the mill was my task also.
- Responsible for the calibration of equipment's, troubleshooting, statistical studies (quality control), and assist students in training on the laboratory.
- Assisted the laboratory's manager to develop and implement action plans according ISO for internal and external laboratory audits.
- Development, implementation and validation of new analytical methods, and validation of new processes on analytical equipment were also a task performed.
- On the year of 1998 was assigned to the bleaching project of the pulp of "Eucalyptus globulus" with chlorine dioxide, in where was responsible for the execution of the laboratory tasks, coordination of the teamwork and interpretation of analytical data.
January 95 - December 95:
- Period as a professional training in the water plant of the city of Aveiro as a lab technician. Performed analysis on drinking waters, domestic, and industrial sewage according to Standard methods of water and wastewater, and ISO norms.
- Preparation and standardization of solutions, and keep detailed laboratory records and files daily.
- Besides these experiences above mentioned, laboratory practices must be highlighted in the following analytical techniques:

* Master's Degree in Geosciences, branch of Minerals and Industrial Rocks, by the University of Aveiro, Portugal. Thesis on the "Study of the application of talc, kaolin and calcium carbonates as fillers in papers", finished on the 29th November 1999.
* Degree in Chemistry (four years degree), branch of Analytical Chemistry, by the University of Aveiro, Portugal, finished on the 21st September 1995. As a final project of this course, did a research job which theme was "Recovery of heavy metals, Hg, Pb, with zeolites, Zeolite-A & ETS-10". Also a seminar project on synthesis of zeolite-A.

* Graduated in 1989 (Chemistry) in the Francisco Franco Secondary School, Funchal, Portugal.
