October 2002 – Present Day
Position: Commissioning Manager
Working for Protomax as a consultant in the construction of three submersible swamp super drilling barges for PT ApexIndo Pratama Duta of Indonesia. In this position I have been responsible for firstly compiling and writing all the equipment and system commissioning procedures for the three vessels Maera, Raissa and Yani. Then organising and supervising the actual commissioning of the rig equipment and systems. Working closely with the classification society (BV) and the shipyard Keppel FELS of Singapore. The work is ongoing at this time and is expected to be complete in middle late May 2003.
1980- Sept 2002 Transocean Inc.
Position: Project Superintendent.
Working within the Technical Support Group based in Singapore.
Recent assignment:: Project Manager responsible for the upgrade of a company vessel from a 5k to a 7.5k high pressure mud system. The project involved upgrading mud pumps, renewal of the complete high pressure mud lines and standpipe manifolds, together with low pressure mud mixing systems, associated piping, centrifugals and mixers. Engineering, equipment selection, purchase, shipping to site and installation, together with prefabrication work was solely my responsibility and was carried out under my supervision.
The project undertaken in the field, was successful, completed within the time-frame of 14 days.
Other responsibilities included the re-commissioning of several drilling rigs for start-up on new contracts. This involved close liaison with the Singapore shipyards during special surveys and dry-docking procedures.
1980 – 2001 RBFalcon Exploration Co. Houston TX.
Positions: Piping & Mechanical Systems Team Leader; Chief Engineer, Maintenance Supervisor.
Assigned to the RBS8M and RBS8D Projects, as part of the engineering group responsible for developing and building a new generation of deepwater semi-submersible drilling rigs.
Initially, working in the Houston office during the design and conceptual engineering stages my responsibilities covered the design of the various systems for these rigs, the equipment layouts and drawing approvals. Helped draw up the specifications for the entire rig and also all its equipment, maintaining a close liaison with vendors and manufacturers. Attended many equipment factory acceptance tests on behalf of the company. These equipment manufacturers consisted of Wartsila engines, Boedewes winches, Liebherr cranes, National Oilwell, Varco, Hannon Hydraulics, Hydralift, Schottel and KaMeWa, Caterpillar, Hamworthy KSE, Alfa Laval, Halco, Halliburton, Outreach, Konsberg Simrad ships management and power management systems.
From Houston the project team transferred to the shipyard office in South Korea working closely with the Hyundai Heavy Industries engineering department and the HHI Production Management Team and also ABS classification society. During the building phase, my responsibility was to lead and co-ordinate a team of piping inspectors, mechanical inspectors and the HHI construction foremen, supervising construction and installation of rig equipment and systems within the shipyard. Later in the building phase my team expanded to include the Chief Engineer's, associated engineering staff, Maintenance Supervisors and mechanical staff assigned to operate the rig. Extensive commissioning of the equipment and systems followed involving working closely with the client commissioning team and shipyard team and classification society until hand over to our operations group and client.
This project culminated in two offshore drilling rigs capable of drilling in 8000-9000 ft of water with various concurrent-drilling operations being developed. The first rig, the Deepwater Nautilus is a conventionally moored vessel, and the second, the Deepwater Horizon a fully dynamically positioned vessel, the drilling equipment on both rigs being basically the same. The total investment by RBFalcon in this project was $600+ million.
Both the Deepwater Nautilus and Deepwater Horizon are now successfully working in Gulf of Mexico. With the Horizon being the most successful new rig in Transocean fleet for operational reliability.
A prior project was a smaller $27 million upgrade of a semi-submersible to increase its deep-water capability, this work was carried out in Singapore.
1979-1980 Zapata Marine Service
Positions: Chief Engineer, Shore Based Engineer.
Joined Zapata as a Chief Engineer and promoted to Shore Based Engineer in Abidjan, responsible for co-ordination of the maintenance and repairs to the 6 supply boats in that operation. Also worked alongside the various regulatory bodies organising and overseeing dry-docking and repairs to other company vessels from operations throughout that continent. Also worked in Canada responsible for the dry-docking and sale of two vessels to the Canadian Government.
1966-1979 Ellerman City Liners London U.K.
Positions: Engineer Cadet Officer – Chief Engineer.
Attended the Marine College (Academy) for a period of three years. The first two years were spent in theoretical studies, culminating in the OND in Engineering qualification. The third year was spent in gaining practical 'hands on ' experience in various engineering disciplines. Experience on the company's many and varied merchant vessels followed, completing a further 18 months of apprenticeship, and through merit promotions progressed to the position of 3rd Engineer Officer. In 1974 I attended college for a further year and obtained the 2nd Engineer Officer's license receiving an immediate promotion to that position. In 1978 I attended college again for another year and obtained my Chief Engineers License. Shortly after, received promotion to Chief Engineer. Responsibilities and experience with Ellerman involved running and maintaining large marine propulsion plant and all the ancillary equipment the largest being 60,000 s.h.p.
