EXPERIENCE IN OIL INDIA LIMITED

Oil India limited (OIL) is a premier, fully integrated national oil company in India. The main operations of the company cover exploration, drilling, production of crude oil and natural gas, transportation of crude oil through 1500 km cross country pipeline feeding four refineries in NE region of India and production of LPG. All these operations are carried out through totally in-house staff and infrastructure. A fully established R&D set up is in operation in the company since 1985. The activities of the R&D department cover research projects in almost all the areas related to operations of the company.

After completing M.Sc in Chemical & Petroleum Engineering at University of Calgary, Calgary, Canada in 1983, I joined OIL as Superintending Chemist. I was promoted to the positions of Deputy Chief Research Scientist in 1987, Chief Research Scientist in 1993 and Deputy General Manager (R&D) in 1996. During last twenty years, besides formulation and execution of number of research projects, my great contribution was in building up the total R&D infra-structure including recruitment of qualified manpower (scientists and supporting staff). I have given below the brief description of R&D projects in which I was actively involved, papers and reports published and special achievements etc.

MAJOR R&D PROJECTS

1. Clarification of produced formation water
2. In-situ nitrogen generation
3. Prevention of formation damage
4. Water shut off
5. Consolidated sand pack technique for sand ingress control
6. Flow behaviour of waxy and asphaltenic crude oils
7. Crude oil conditioning by chemical and thermal methods for crude oil transportation
8. Removal of condensate from gas lift gas lines
9. Identification of oil field production chemicals (Flow improvers, oil soluble demulsifiers, deoilers, corrosion inhibitors, polymers and cross linkers for water shut off jobs, oxygen scavengers etc)
10. Enhanced Oil Recovery techniques i. Carbon dioxide miscible EOR technique ii. Thermal methods of EOR for heavy oil recovery iii. Alkali flooding EOR method iv. Polymer flooding
11. Coal liquefaction by HRI's ebullated bed catalytic hydrogenation technique

Most of the above mentioned projects were initiated for the first time in the company right from conceptualization and they were carried out through theoretical studies and laboratory experimentation to field implementation.
Significant Achievements/Contributions in last 10 years

 A new Geochemical technique for analysis of side wall cores for identification of reservoir fluids has been developed. The data generated has well supplemented log information for identification of reservoir fluids in various zones in a well.

 A novel technique for rapid extraction of sidewall cores has been developed. The time taken for extraction in the new technique and apparatus is 3-4 hours compared to 24 hours in the conventional Soxhlet extraction.

 Studies on sandstone facies variation and depositional, reservoir and crude oil characteristics of the Lakadong member in Eastern Assam Basin.

 Oil to oil correlation studies on crude oils from Upper Assam Basin using whole oil chromatography.

 A well monitoring system consisting of echometer and dynamometer has been effectively used for measuring well inflow and monitoring road pump gas lift and well flow performances.

 Design of acid formulation for achieving improved and sustained injectivity in water injection wells was optimized.

 High rate water pack technique was successfully implemented to control sand ingress in oil producing well.

 Water shut-off polymer for high temperature producing wells was identified.

 Gelled oil treatment to reduce paraffin deposition in production tubing was carried out in two wells with encouraging results.

 Asphaltene dispersant squeeze treatment was carried out in two wells with encouraging results.

 Performance evaluation of (Magnetic Fluid Conditioners (MFCs) for paraffin control in tubing.

 Development of fluid loss reducing chemicals to arrest fluid loss in workover operations of highly sub-hydrostatic pressure wells.

 The crude oil treatment process for pipeline transportation of OIL and ONGCL's crude oil has been optimized to reduce treatment cost substantially and studies on paraffin deposition control.

 Treatment of soil and formation water pits contaminated with crude oil and oily sludge has been carried out with bioremediating agent with encouraging results.

 The Coal-oil Coprocessing Pilot Plant has been commissioned and 5 runs have been successfully carried out. Techno economic feasibility study for the coal oil coprocessing is being carried out.

 Development of advanced geochemical techniques for petroleum exploration and exploitation of alternate energy sources (OIDB funded).

 Feasibility study of horizontal drilling technique in OIL's operational areas (OIDB funded)

 Standardization of crude oil rheology measurement technique and rheological characterization.

 Won two awards in SPE India paper contests

 I was awarded special increments for three years (1984, 86 and 89) for excellent performance and contributions.

 Won twice National Petroleum Management Programme Award of MOP&NG in Creativity & Innovation (team Category). (During the years 2000 & 2002)

 Chaired one technical session in Workshop on "Challenges in Crude Evaluation with Changing Crude Scenario" at IIP Dehradun - April 1995
